Checheng ( Chinese 車 城鄉 , Pinyin Chēchéng Xiāng , W.-G. Ch'e 1 -ch'eng 2 Hsiang 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Chha-siâⁿ-hiong / Chhia-siâⁿ-hiong ) is a rural community in Pingtung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).
location
Checheng is located near the southern tip of the west coast of the island of Taiwan. The community consists of a narrow, approximately 20 km long coastal plain with a 4 to 5 km wide section that extends about 9 km into the inland. The terrain is hilly up to the coastal plain and the highest point is the Wenzhaoshan ( 蚊 罩 山 ) at 635 meters , the summit of which is on the border with the neighboring communities of Mudan and Shizi. The most important river is the small river Sizhong or Checheng ( 四 重 溪 , or 車 城 溪 ), which is about 32 kilometers long and has its source in the neighboring municipality of Mudan, runs in a south-westerly direction and flows into the Taiwan Strait. The climate is tropical and hot with temperatures between 24 and 32 ° C in the summer months and between 17 and 27 ° C in the winter months.
The neighboring communities are Fangshan and Shizi in the north, Mudan in the northeast and east, Manzhou in the southeast and Hengchun in the south. The western boundary forms the coast to Formosa Street .
history
Was colonized in the 17th century, when the island of Taiwan (Formosa) part of European maritime powers temporarily and partially, the area of Checheng was from the indigenous people of the Paiwan populated. Shortly after Formosa was taken over by the Chinese Empire , the first Han Chinese immigrants from the coastal province of Fujian reached the Checheng area in 1696. To fend off attacks by the Paiwan, they finally built a fortification made of wooden palisades, called Chaicheng ( 柴 城 ), from which the later place name was derived. During the Lin-Shuangwen uprising 1787-1788 landed a fleet of Qing -Kaisers Qianlong led by Fuk'anggan ( 福康安 ) in Checheng and gave the place the name Fu'an Zhuang ( 福安庄 , "village Fu'an "). During the Japanese punitive expedition to Taiwan in 1874 , a Japanese military unit devastated Paiwan settlements. During the Japanese rule over Taiwan , the region belonged to Takao Prefecture from 1920 . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan after the Second World War, the area was again administratively reorganized as Checheng Municipality .

According to official statistics, at the end of 2017, 249 people (around 2.9%) belonged to the indigenous peoples. That was about the Taiwanese average.

Administrative division
Checheng is divided into 11 villages ( 村 , Cūn ): Haikou ( 海口 村 ), Tianzhong ( 田中 村 ), Tongbu ( 統 埔村 ), Fuxing ( 福興 村 ), Fu'an ( 福安 村 ), Wenquan ( 溫泉 村 ), Baoli ( 保 力 村 ), Xinjie ( 新 街村 ), Buqian ( 埔 墘 村 ), Sheliao ( 射 寮村 ), Houwan ( 後 灣村 ).
traffic
The two most important traffic arteries are Provincial Road 26, which runs through Checheng in a north-south direction, and County Road 199, which branches off from it in a north-east direction and which leads to the neighboring municipality of Mudan. There is no railway connection.
Agriculture and fishing
A significant part of the population makes a living in agriculture and fishing. The agricultural area is mainly in the Checheng river plain . The cultivation of onions is best known.
Educational institutions
Checheng is the National Museum of Marine Biology Aquarium (NMMBA, Chinese 海洋生物國立博物館 , Pinyin Guoli Hǎiyáng Shengwu Bówùguǎn , Eng. National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium ) settled. The museum opened in 2000 and is the largest of its kind in Taiwan. Two research institutes were founded on August 30, 2005 in Checheng under the sponsorship of the museum and the Dong Hwa National University (NDHU): the Institute for Marine Biotechnology and the Institute for Marine Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology . One of the campuses of Pingtung National University is also located in Checheng.
Tourism, sightseeing
The small fishing port in Haikou is worth seeing. Geothermal hot springs can be found along the Sizhong River where you can bathe. A small portion of the municipal area (4.4022 km²) still belongs to the Kenting National Park, which is adjacent to the south .
In the village of Fu'an there is the Fu'an Temple ( 福安 宮 , Fú'ān Gōng ), which is dedicated to the earth deity Tudigong ( 土地公 ) or Fude Zhengshen ( 福德正神 ). It is the largest such temple in South Asia (as of 2016). The Shimen battle memorial commemorates a battle as part of the Japanese expedition of 1874.
In the community is the Sichongxi thermal bath , which dates back to the Japanese colonial times.
