The article provides a detailed account of the Chinese national soccer team for women in the Summer Olympics . The People's Republic of China took part in the first four and sixth women's tournaments at the Olympic Games and was able to reach the final of the first event, but lost it to the later record Olympic champion USA. In the medal table, China ranks fifth, along with Japan and Sweden , who all came second once.

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

By reaching the World Cup quarter-finals in 1995, the Chinese were qualified for the first Olympic women's football tournament. They started with a 2-0 win against Sweden , then won 5-1 against Denmark and reached the semi-finals with a 0-0 win against hosts USA due to the more goals they scored against the northern Europeans. Here they met Brazil and won 3-2 with two goals from Wei Haiying in the 83rd and final minute, which was only substituted in the 55th minute. It is the only win against Brazil to date. In the final, they met the USA again and lost 2-1. The substitution of Wei Haiying immediately after the 1: 2 was unsuccessful.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

For the Games in 2000 also had Beijing advertised, but was failed in the vote on the final lap. For the second women's Olympic soccer tournament, however, the Chinese were again qualified by reaching the 1999 World Cup quarter-finals . They started the tournament with a 3: 1 against Nigeria and then achieved a 1: 1 against the USA in the remake of the World Cup final. Due to a 1: 2 defeat against Norway they then had to give them second place and were eliminated. With four goals, Sun Wen was the tournament's top scorer despite being eliminated early.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the Chinese qualified as winners at a qualifying tournament that was held in Japan in April 2004 . They first defeated Myanmar 11-0 in the group stage , then Guam 9-0 and then South Korea 3-0. A 1-0 win in the semifinals, in which they met South Korea again, then qualified. The final, which is no longer decisive for the qualification, was also won 1-0 against Japan .

In one of two groups of three they lost their opening game against world champions Germany with 0: 8 and received their highest international defeat. Since then against the newcomer Mexico only achieved a 1-1 draw and the Mexicans only lost 2-0 to the world champions, the Chinese were eliminated as the worst group third.

2008 Olympics in Beijing

The Chinese women were automatically qualified as hosts for the tournament in the People's Republic of China .

At the beginning of the tournament they won against Sweden 2-1. Then it was enough against Canada only to a 1: 1. With a 2-0 win against newcomers Argentina , in which they took the lead with an own goal by the South Americans and only scored the final score in the final minute, they reached the quarter-finals as group winners. Here they met Japan and lost 2-0.

Olympia 2012 in London

The Chinese missed participation in the tournament in London as fourth in the group at the final Asian qualification tournament on home soil, although they could not use the home advantage.

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

The two best teams qualify for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro at a tournament in Osaka, Japan . Opponents at the tournament that started on February 29, 2016 are Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea and Vietnam. With three wins and one draw, China was able to qualify for Rio before the last game against the also qualified Australians. Opponents in Brazil in the group stage were hosts Brazil , who lost 3-0 at the beginning, Sweden (0-0) and South Africa (2-0). As second in the group, the Chinese met European champions Germany in the quarter-finals and lost 1-0.
