Christian Weber (born July 1, 1946 in Krobsdorf in Silesia ; † February 12, 2019 in Bremen ) was President of the Citizenship of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and a member of the SPD from 1999 to 2019 .

Family, education and work

Christian Weber was born as the fifth child of his parents, Marta and Erich Weber, in Krobsdorf in Silesia. A few weeks after his birth, the family was expelled by Polish troops from the area that was then part of the German Empire and found shelter in Ossendorf , a district of Warburg , in East Westphalia . Christian Weber spent most of his childhood here, attended elementary and secondary school, and completed the two-year commercial college .

After graduating from commercial school in March 1967, Christian Weber did his basic military service at the Bundeswehr location Rheine in Westphalia from April 1967 to October 1968 . He then began his training as a banker at Commerzbank in Düsseldorf . He then took over the second-chance education , the high school after. From 1973 to 1979 Christian Weber studied in Göttingen and Bremen teacher for secondary education with the combination of subjects history , geography and social studies . In 1983 he took over the management of the Bremen youth workshops and of the Bremen training workshop, which he held until the mid-1990s.

Weber died after a long illness at the age of 72 in Bremen. He was buried in Bremen Cathedral after a state ceremony .

Christian Weber had been a member of the SPD since 1972 . In 1977 he was elected to the board of the SPD local association Hastedt , and from 1986 to 1990 he chaired it. From 1978 to 1990 he was a member of the Hemelingen Advisory Board . During this time, among other things, the Mercedes-Benz plant was established in the Hemelingen district of Sebaldsbrück. From 1979 to 1990 he was spokesman for the advisory board. From 1983 to 1990 he was also the spokesman for the full advisory board for Bremen.

Since September 10, 1990 he was a member of the Bremen Parliament. From 1995 to 1999 he was chairman of the SPD parliamentary group . On July 7, 1999, he succeeded Reinhard Metz (CDU) as President of the Bremen Citizenship, which he held until his death.

As President of the Parliament, Christian Weber opened the parliament building to visitors. Since then, regular tours have been offered and the house is available for events outside of the plenary sessions. For example, the House of Citizenship is a permanent venue for the Bremen Music Festival.

As President of the Citizenship, Christian Weber campaigned for reconciliation with Israel and Poland, mainly within the framework of the town twinning with Haifa and Gdansk . At Weber's endeavor, there is an annual student exchange between Bremen and Haifa, the “Student Exchange Bremen Haifa”. In addition, the board of the Bremen citizenship visited Haifa at regular intervals. Previously, he had the previous director Rainer Oellerich retired early. Due to a rival complaint , the position was initially vacant before Karl-Heinz Hage became the new director in 2009. Christian Weber belonged to the board of the Bremen citizenship and the budget and finance committee (state and city). He was also chairman of the constitution and rules of procedure committee as well as a deputy member of the controlling committee.
