Ciudad Juarez ( Juarez City ) is a city in the state of Chihuahua in northern Mexico and the administrative seat of the Municipio Juarez . It lies on the border with the United States across from El Paso , with which it is connected by four bridges, and at the tributary of the Río Conchos into the Rio Grande . The population is 1,321,004 (2010 census). The metropolitan region of Ciudad Juárez / El Paso has around two million inhabitants.

Since the establishment of the NAFTA Free Trade Area (Mexico, USA and Canada) in 1994, Ciudad Juárez has been one of the fastest growing cities in Mexico, as the settlement of so-called maquiladoras against the background that wages are lower compared to the USA, after investments withdrew.

One effect of the partly uncontrolled immigration are the poor settlements around the city, such as B. the Colonia Anapra in the northwest.

history

On December 8, 1659, Father García de San Francisco founded the Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Mansos del Paso del Norte in what is now the city . In 1683 the city was called "Presidio Paso del Norte". The city lost its northern part, today's El Paso, as a result of the delimitation laid down in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848). The city was given its current name in 1888 in honor of the Mexican President Benito Juárez .

During the Mexican Revolution , the city was repeatedly a bone of contention between government forces and revolutionaries due to its importance for border traffic to the United States . In the initial phase of the revolution, it was captured on May 10, 1911 by the northern revolutionary troops, under the command of Giuseppe Garibaldi the Younger , Pascual Orozco , Pancho Villa and others. Negotiators for Mexico's long-term president and dictator Porfirio Díaz then signed the Ciudad Juárez Treaty (El Tratado de Ciudad Juárez) with his challenger Francisco Madero, which envisaged the resignation of Díaz and his vice-president and new elections. Díaz then went into exile and Madero was elected president, completing the first phase of the revolution.

population

Due to its proximity to the United States, the city has seen rapid population growth in recent decades. The poor security situation in the city merely weakened the situation.

crime

The city holds a top position in crime statistics. Of all Mexican cities, it has been hardest hit by the drug war that has raged in Mexico since 2007 . In the city, the Sinaloa cartel and the Juárez cartel are fighting for supremacy. Around 1,600 people were murdered in 2008, 2,657 in 2009, 3,111 in 2010 and 749 in 2012. Under pressure from organized crime, the city's chief police officer, Roberto Orduña Cruz, resigned in February 2009. In addition, there have been several hundred victims since a series of murders against women and girls began. (→  Femicide in Ciudad Juárez ). In 2019, around 1,300 women sought help from the local women's institute, which offers advice from lawyers , social workers and psychologists .

Gregory Nava directed the 2006 film Bordertown about these murders. The documentary filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi and the author Charles Bowden shot the documentary The Contract Killer - Room 164 near Juárez in 2010 . In it, a former contract killer of a cartel speaks about his 20 years of membership. Crime is also discussed in the feature film Sicario .
