The Atenas de San Carlos , also known as Atenas de San Carlos known (nickname: Azulgrana , Negros , Atenienses ) is a football club from the Departamento Maldonado town of San Carlos in the south of Uruguay . The club's soccer team plays in the second highest Uruguayan league, the Segunda División , in the 2016 season .
history
The association was founded on May 1st, 1928. In 1965, 1975, 1976 and most recently in 2001 the Copa El País could be won. At the end of the 2008/09 season they rose as table 3. for the first time from the Segunda División, Uruguay's second-highest division, to the Primera División . At the end of the 2009/10 season, however, the club rose as bottom of the table immediately back to the second division as 16th in the table. The following second division season was contested quite successfully and, as third in the table, only narrowly missed the two promotion ranks. you reached the play-offs for promotion. There they failed in the semi-finals after two 1-0 defeats, each sealed by Simón Pagua, at what would later be the third first division promoted team of the year, Cerro Largo FC . In the 2011/12 season they only placed 8th in the final table. In the subsequent promotion play-offs, Huracán was the final destination in the quarterfinals.
The 2013/14 season ended as runner-up and runner-up in the Segunda División. Due to the associated promotion, Club Atlético Atenas played in the Primera División in the 2014/15 season. Promotion coach Edgardo Arias extended his contract in June 2014. His coaching staff consisted of assistant coach Diego Sienra, Prof. Marcos Rodríguez and goalkeeping coach Rafael Hermida. In the following first division season, the team from Atenas performed best compared to the two promoted teams Rampla Juniors and Tacuarembó FC . They took 12th place in the overall table for the year, but still had to go straight back to the second division as 14th and third from bottom in the relegation ranking.
