The GDR ice hockey champion 1952/53 was determined for the first time in the league . According to a decision by the presidium of the ice hockey section, the league was reduced to five teams in order to achieve a further increase in performance in the battle of teams of approximately equal value .

The GDR champion was the BSG Chemie Weißwasser , which defended its title from the previous season without losing points.

    Relegation (Oberliga - Liga)

    Originally, both season winners were to be promoted to the league. The winner of Season A, SG Dynamo Berlin, was dissolved by decision of GDR officials and their players were united with BSG Chemie Weißwasser to form SG Dynamo Weißwasser . A tournament between the last placed in the league, the runner-up in the league season A and a team from the league season B was held around the league place that had become free.

    Promotion round to the league 1953/54

    The 15 district champions of the GDR were eligible to participate in the promotion round to the league. Since some districts united to form district groups, a total of ten teams took part in the promotion round, which the three promoted teams determined in two rounds.
