The GDR ice hockey championship 1956/57 was held in a major league with six teams. The SG Dynamo Weißwasser defended her title from the previous year to drop a point. The 2nd division started the season with four seasons for the first time, which were divided according to regional aspects. In season 1, teams from the Karl-Marx-Stadt district played almost exclusively , in season 2 mainly teams from Lausitz , in season 3 exclusively Thuringian teams and in season 4 the representatives from the districts of Halle and Magdeburg , including the Harz region .
While the top division round was held exclusively in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle in Berlin , numerous matches in the lower divisions - usually played on natural ice rinks - fell victim to the unfavorable weather. At the end of May 1957 it was decided to end the championship prematurely and to cancel all games still open without replacement. The promotion and relegation regulation was suspended and the divisions with unchanged occupation in the subsequent 1957/58 season .
1 The BSG Turbine Erfurt played as BSG Turbine Crimmitschau until the penultimate match.
More games were not played.
2nd league
Promotion round to the 1st division
Due to the incomplete final scores, the promotion round was canceled. While all the 2nd league teams remained in this division, two newcomers (possibly district champions?) Were classified in the 1st league for the coming season with the sports club teams ASK Vorwärts Berlin and SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt .
2 The BSG Einheit Halle started in the preseason under the name BSG Einheit Mitte Halle.
Promotion games to the 2nd league 1957/58
The promotion tournament of the district champions was canceled due to the repealed promotion and relegation regulation. The districts that were able to bring their championships to a conclusion were allowed to nominate their representative for the upcoming second league season. Ultimately, only one district champion, BSG Motor Eisenach ( Bez. Erfurt ), was supposed to complete the field of participants in the third division in 1957/58.
