Danby is a town in Rutland County of the state of Vermont in the United States with 1,311 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census).

Geographical location
Danby is in the south of Rutland County, in the Green Mountains . The area of the town is interspersed with hills and valleys. The Otter Creek flows on the eastern edge of the area of the town in a northerly direction and several streams flow through the town. The largest body of water is Danby Pond, centrally located in the town. The Dorset Peak is the highest point in the area of the town with 1149 m. To the west are the Clarendon Caves . The Morris Cave in Danby is the fourth largest cave in New England.

history
Danby was founded on August 27, 1761 as a Grant by Benning Wentworth . Settlement began in 1765, and the settlers came from Great Nine Partners Patent , a grant in Dutchess County , New York from 1697, from New York Governor Benjamin Fletcher . The first city assembly took place on March 14, 1769. First the area around Danby Four Corners was settled, then Danby Borough followed . Initially there were only a few mills in the town, as the waters flowing through them are not particularly large. A flour mill was missing for a long time.
There are large marble quarries in Danby . The marble has been quarried since 1827. The first marble sawmill was built in 1840 and in 1850 more than 600 workers found work in the marble quarries and production facilities. Most of them came from Italy and Poland. In 1851 Danby was connected to the Rutland – Hoosick Junction railway . Mainly to be able to transport the marble from Danby. The Danby Village Historic District, which was included in the National Register of Historic Places with 113 objects in 1983, testifies to this rich past .

Quakers settled in Danby in the east of the town early on, Orthodox in the north and Methodists , Baptists and the Congregational Church founded congregations in Danby.

traffic
The US Highway 7 runs in a north-south direction along the eastern border of the Town, of Wallingfort to Manchester. Danby Mountain Road runs centrally through Danby. The Rutland – Hoosick Junction railway runs through Danby.

There is no hospital of its own in Danby. The closest hospital is Emma Laing Stevens Hospital in Granville, New York.
education
Danby belongs to the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union with Danby, Dorset, Langrove, Londonderry, Manchester, Mt. Tabor, Pawlet, Peru, Rupert, Sunderland, Weston and Winhall. There is a school in Danby, the Currier Memorial School .
The SL Griffith Library is located on South Main Street. In his will, SL Griffith set up a fund to build the library. He also donated additional funds for the purchase of new books. The library opened in 1908.
