Joko versus Klaas - The Duel Around the World ( DudW for short ) is a German game show that was broadcast for the first time on July 21, 2012 on the private broadcaster ProSieben . The show is a competition between Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf , better known as the duo Joko and Klaas , who first travel to different countries and have to solve tasks there and then are given another task belonging to the respective country in the studio. The show is moderated by Jeannine Michaelsen .

The show paused in 2016. On September 9, 2017, the fifth season started, the two episodes of which were both broadcast live.

The seasons from 2018 onwards run under the title The Duel Around the World - Team Joko versus Team Klaas . Joko and Klaas each have two changing celebrities by their side. The first live edition of the Team Edition ran in August 2019.

Game concept

Joko Winterscheidt and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf are sent separately to three or four different countries around the world and each is given a task by the other. Then the person whose turn it is is given a second task on the land that has to be solved in the studio.

Since 2018, members of the teams from Klaas Heufer-Umlauf and Joko Winterscheidt have been sent to three different countries and given a task by the other. Then there is a studio game (duel) between Joko and Klaas.

In 2012, the distribution of the points was as follows: Those who passed the tasks both in the country and in the studio received one point for the country. If only one of the two tasks was solved, no point was awarded. If neither problem was solved, the opponent was assigned a point.

Since 2013 you get one point each time you solve the country or the studio task. So there are a maximum of 2 points per country. The difference in points determines a bonus for the leader for the last game, the winner of which is simply called world champion . Since the third season (2014) each country has been playing against each other in the studio games instead of individually as before.

On March 15, 2014, a special issue entitled Joko versus Klaas - The toughest duels around the world was broadcast, in which the best scenes from the first five duels and looks behind the scenes were shown and audience questions were answered. The show was moderated by Olli Schulz . On July 30, 2016, another best-of was shown with a look back at four years of the show, with the title Joko versus Klaas - The best of four years . On June 17, 2017, the best of Joko against Klaas - the best duels around the world .

criticism

Oddsmeter.de judges that the single players from the respective countries are very entertaining, but are too long. The studio models were "clearly more entertaining - but also clearly less spectacular overall". Welt.de criticizes the fact that the show is "quite lengthy in places" and that some things are "badly staged". The moderators are still certified as having a good job.

The Commission for the Protection of Young People in the Media (KJM) found that the third edition violated the protection of minors several times. She criticized punishment by boxing blows to the head and electric shocks. The program was therefore not suitable for young people under the age of 16 and should not have been broadcast until after 10 p.m. Although the issue had already been split up and the second part - in which Winterscheidt had his lips sewn together - was broadcast immediately after the first part, but only after 10 p.m., the KJM also objected to this. Both parts are content-related broadcasts that must therefore also be assessed together.

In 2020, the reporting format STRG F demonstrated the undeclared staging of several episodes of the program and related false statements by those involved. In contrast to what is shown, the protagonists are informed about the course of the program and the program is thus scripted reality .
