When she was eight, Spina moved the family to Mesa , Arizona . When choosing the place of residence, care was taken to ensure that there was an ice rink for training in the immediate vicinity. His decision to move to Boston enabled Spina to play with his friends Ben and Patrick Eaves for the next several years. With his team he was able to qualify three times for the championship tournament of the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 2003 to 2005 . In 2004 they reached the final series called Frozen Four , in which they lost in the semifinals. In his senior season at college, Spina won the Hockey East championship with the Eagles.

There he scored 50 points scorer in 76 games and was one of the best players on his team, so his contract was extended by the Coyotes. In the training camp of the NHL team Spina could not prevail and was again sent to the AHL for the 2008/09 season . This also happened in the 2009/10 season . In August 2010 he signed a contract with the NHL team St. Louis Blues and played for the Peoria Rivermen in the AHL. For the 2011/12 season Spina moved to Europe in the German Ice Hockey League to the Iserlohn Roosters . With the Roosters he was able to qualify for the pre-playoffs, in which one was eliminated. He then signed with the Swedish club MODO Hockey from the Svenska Hockeyligan . After good performance, his contract was extended to 2014, but left the club in February 2014 and moved to Saimaan Pallo in the Finnish Liiga .
