The Lagunas district is located in the Chiclayo province in the Lambayeque region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It extends over an area of 430 km². The 2017 census counted 10,336 residents. In 1993 the population was 8153, in 2007 it was 9351. The district administration is located in the 33 m high town of Mocupe with 4973 inhabitants (as of 2017). Mocupe is about 35 km southeast of the regional and provincial capital Chiclayo .
Geographical location
The Lagunas district is located on the Pacific coast in the extreme southwest of the Chiclayo province. The Río Zaña flows through the district in a south-westerly direction and finally flows into the sea. Irrigated agriculture is carried out along this. Otherwise there is desert vegetation. The national road 1N ( Panamericana ) crosses the district.
The Lagunas district borders in the northwest on the Eten district , in the north on the Saña district and in the southeast on the Pacanga and Pueblo Nuevo districts (both in the Chepén province ).
