The Tumán district is located in the Chiclayo province in the Lambayeque region in northwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​130.34 km². The 2017 census counted 27,782 residents. In 2007 the population was 28,120. The seat of the district administration is the city of Tumán . The district was established on January 29, 1998. He was removed from the existing Picsi district .

The Tumán district is located in the coastal plain of northwestern Peru 15 km east of the city of Chiclayo . It is centrally located in the province of Chiclayo. It has a maximum length in north-south direction of about 20 km. The lower reaches of the Río Chancay crosses the southern part of the district in a westerly direction. To the south of the river there is a desert-like hilly landscape. Otherwise, irrigated agriculture is practiced in the district.

The Tumán district borders in the northwest on the Picsi district, in the north on the Manuel Antonio Mesones Muro district ( Ferreñafe province ), in the east on the Pátapo and Pucalá districts , in the south on the Saña district and in the southwest on the Pomalca district .
