information Donkey Kong Country 3 is as Virtual Console game for Wii and Wii U available. In addition, the DKC3-based Game Boy game Donkey Kong Land III was released .

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! (unofficially often abbreviated as Donkey Kong Country 3 or DKC3 ) is the third side-scrolling - Jump 'n' Run - Computer game of Donkey Kong Country , the series of Rareware for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System developed (SNES) has been. Nintendo released it on November 22, 1996 as the successor to Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest .

action

Even several months after their victory over King K. Rool in DKC2, the Kongs are still enjoying their triumph. One morning Dixie Kong doesn't find her boyfriend Diddy Kong in his room, but a letter with the content “Dear Dixie, take a look around the islands with DK. Until tomorrow! Diddy ”. At first Dixie thinks nothing of it when Donkey and Diddy are not back even after days, but sets off to look for them. She meets Wrinkly and Funky, who advises her to take Kiddy Kong with her on her journey. Then Dixie and Kiddy leave to look for their friends.

Gameplay

General

The game principle is generally similar to that of Donkey Kong Country 2. Bonus coins have to be collected again, which are needed for advancing in the lost world of Krematoa . These bonus coins are obtained when you successfully complete a task in a bonus barrel. There are four types of bonus games. If the task is: "Collect [certain number of] stars!", The bonus coin appears when you have been able to collect the required number of stars. In “Grab 15 Bananas!” The player has to collect 15 green bananas, one of which appears for a short time. For the task "Find the coin!" The bonus coin is placed somewhere in the bonus level and must be found or reached. There is also the task “Kill all opponents”, in which you have to eliminate the opponents in the bonus game within a certain time.

DK coins must also be found again. In contrast to DKC2, however, the DK coins in DKC3 are guarded by the Kremling Koin , which must first be defeated before you can call the coin your own. This makes collecting the DK coins even more difficult. In addition, bear coins can be collected, which are needed by individual members of the Bär Brothers in order to purchase various things. Furthermore, bananas, banana trees, balloons and the letters KONG are distributed in the levels. Collecting all four letters and collecting 100 bananas gives you an extra life, just like collecting a red balloon. A green one gives two lives and a blue one three lives.

The ability to piggyback your partner is also back in DKC3. However, this time the protagonists differ in their throwing behavior. Dixie flies much higher than Kiddy when throwing. In return, when Kiddy is thrown, he can open hidden holes in the floor.

A novelty in DKC3 are the so-called banana birds . These are scattered all over the world and must be collected or liberated. Some can be acquired by the Kongs through barter deals with the bears, but most are encased in crystals. In the crystal caves in which these crystals are located, color combinations are played, which you then have to replay using the controller buttons. If you play the given color combination correctly, the banana bird is freed. After their liberation, these banana birds find temporary new homes at Wrinkly Kong.

In DKC3 there is also the option of using a flagpole to see whether you have found all bonus games and the DK coin for the respective level after completing a level . In addition, an exclamation mark appears next to the level name when you have discovered all bonus rooms.

The game is saved in the memory cave of Wrinkly Kong, and regular visits to Funky Kong are essential, as Funky Kong uses parts that the player first has to unlock to build new vehicles with which one can drive to previously inaccessible parts of the map. The motorboat is available from the start, but only the first two game worlds can be reached with it. When you have finished the second game world, you get a patch that Funky uses to build the hovercraft . This can be used to drive over rocks. With this boat new crystal caves and the third and fourth game world can be approached. When you defeat the bosses in the third and fourth game world, you get one ski each. If you bring both skis to Funky, he 'll build the super ski . This is able to drive up waterfalls so that new crystal caves and the rest of the game worlds can be reached. If you collect all DK coins you get the so-called gyrocopter as the last vehicle . With this helicopter you can fly to high-altitude crystal caves.

Including the end boss, Donkey Kong Country 3 consists of 48 levels. When all bosses and Baron K. Roolenstein have been defeated, all bonus and DK coins have been found, all banana birds have been freed and the secret of the lost world has been revealed, you have reached the maximum score of 103%. The level of difficulty can be increased by using the console code “TUFST” before creating the game. This is expressed by the fact that there are no more star barrels and almost no DK barrels in which you can get your companion back if you have lost it. By entering the code it is possible to get 105%. In addition, the word “Super Monkey” and a Cranky Kong trophy in which he wears a karate outfit are displayed in the leaderboard that is displayed at the end.

Scores

A maximum of three saved games can be created in Donkey Kong Country 3. These can also be copied and deleted again. The new option is to assign name IDs with up to five letters. In the game status menu, the game mode, the name, the game progress and the playing time of the individual game statuses are displayed. The sound can be output in both mono and stereo . English, French and German are available in the language selection.

Game modes

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! can be completed by the player in three game modes :

  • 1-player mode: One player takes on the game alone.
  • 2-player contest: Here two players play against each other. If a player has lost a life or finished a level, the other player starts the game. The competition is which player can complete more levels in a given time.
  • 2-player team: Two players form a team in which one player controls Dixie Kong and the other player controls Kiddy Kong.

Game screen

In the level

Various indicators appear on the game screen while you play. However, these are not displayed permanently, but only appear when a corresponding item has been collected or the individual display is needed. The following displays are available within a level:

  • "Banana Counter": Displays the amount of bananas collected.
  • "KONG letters": If you collect one of the four letters, this and those that have been collected up to then are displayed.
  • "Life indicator": This indicator is shown when you collect a balloon or lose a life. It shows the lives available.
  • "Bear Coins": Shows the number of bear coins collected.
  • "Timer": This is shown in certain levels and in bonus games. There is only a certain amount of time available for each bonus game.
On the overview map

The levels that have already been unlocked and the various service points of the Kong family and the Bär brothers are displayed on the overview map. A level that has yet to be completed is represented by a black flag with a white K, an already completed level with a flag in the color of the kong that has actively reached the goal of the level. If this is Dixie, the flag is pink, for Kiddy Kong it is blue. If you have discovered and completed all bonus rooms, the flag flutters horizontally, if you haven't, it hangs down. If you collect the DK coin in the respective level, a small yellow pennant also hangs on the flagpole. The focal points of the Kong family, such as Wrinkly's storage cave or Swanky's gambling tent, and the huts of the bear brothers are represented by the respective building itself. For every selectable level or game world, the name of the respective level or game world is displayed at the bottom of the screen. If you have completed all bonus levels in a level, an exclamation mark appears next to the level name.

to save

The game can only be saved in the Wrinkly Kong storage cave. If you save the game, a graphic is displayed. This shows the name of the score, the playing time, the number of bonus, DK and bear coins collected as well as the banana birds, all objects and gears collected. With the help of a console code integrated into the game by Rare, it is possible to save automatically after each level. To do this, the word "ASAVE" must be entered in cheat mode .

Game worlds

In contrast to the predecessors Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, in which all individual game worlds are located on a large island, the individual worlds in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! to various smaller islands, which can be approached little by little with better and better boats from Funky Kong.

development

Donkey Kong Country 3, like its two SNES predecessors, was developed by Rare and published by Nintendo . Rare founder Tim Stamper was, as with DKC and DKC2, a director. Andrew Collard was the producer and responsible for game design .

The Game Boy Advance remake and the DKC3-based Donkey Kong Land 3 also come from Rare. In the GBA remake, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who died in 2015, was used as executive producer and Kensuke Tanabe as producer.

Technical

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! uses a 32- megabit - SNES module for data storage. Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2 also use 32 Mbit modules.

The Donkey Kong Country parts for the SNES are pure side scrollers . In side-scroller games, only the parts of the level in which the characters are currently moving are displayed. The images always run horizontally from left to right or vice versa. The player always looks at the game from the side. The image is displayed in a 2D graphic. Donkey Kong Country Returns is also a side scroller, but this is already a 2½D video game. Here, two-dimensional data pass over to three-dimensionally structured data. In the latest part of the Donkey Kong Country series, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, 2D elements are connected with 3D elements. This is achieved by the fact that the camera sometimes moves in the background or rotates around some levels.

The first Donkey Kong game with full 3D graphics is Diddy Kong Racing , released in 1997 , followed by Donkey Kong 64 .

Console codes

In Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! it is possible to use console codes officially integrated into the game by Rare, which change the game process or have a cheat effect . To enter these codes, the respective score in which you want to use the code must be marked and the key combination "L, R, R, L, R, R, L, R, L, R" executed with the help of the controller . The codes can then be entered. Several codes can be used at the same time, and the effect is retained for the respective game status after saving.

Sales figures

Overall, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! around 3.51 million units sold.

With this sales figure, the game behind Super Mario World , Super Mario All-Stars , Donkey Kong Country , Super Mario Kart , Street Fighter II - The World Warrior , Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest , The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past , Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, and Street Fighter II Turbo ranked 10th best-selling SNES game. Super Mario World is by far the most successful SNES game and reached around 20.6 million units sold, almost six times as many as Donkey Kong Country 3.

The Game Boy Advance remake of Donkey Kong Country 3 was sold approximately 0.77 million times. This makes it 85th on the list of the most successful GBA games. First place is Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Edition with around 15.85 million units sold.

Reviews

The reviews and ratings of Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! were mostly good, even if the ratings of the predecessors could not always be achieved.

“I admit that I was skeptical at first and only expected another jump 'n run infusion. But Rare taught me better. The small but fine improvements, mostly borrowed from the RPG genre, contribute significantly to long-term motivation. Through the numerous secrets, the non-linear gameplay (after the second world you have several sections to choose from) and the step-by-step exploration of the island realm, a skillful arc of suspense is built up. The level design is again at the highest level, including the extremely hard calculated but always fair level of difficulty. New components are not exactly available in abundance, but due to the outstanding playability one is happy to forgive this supposed lack of ideas. The technology is also impressive. "

- Mega fun

GameRankings assigns a rating of 83.24%. The rating website Metacritic gives the GBA version of the game a Metascore of 77. The video game website GameSpot rates DKC3 with a 7.8. In IGN Entertainment is the rating at 8.5, at MobyGames at 87. The German-language online magazine 4Players rated the game with 79 of 100 possible points and awarded the distinction of "GOOD".

Remakes

Game Boy

Logo of the GB game Donkey Kong Land III

Like its predecessors, there was also one on Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble! based game designed for the Game Boy . It is called Donkey Kong Land III and was released on October 1, 1997. This is not a live version of the SNES game. Donkey Kong Land III is based on Donkey Kong Country 3, but has its own levels and game worlds, and the plot has been slightly changed.

Originally, DKL3 was supposed to be subtitled The Race Against Time , but this idea was discarded before it was released. Donkey Kong Land III was sold approximately 1.03 million times.

In Japan, on January 28, 2000, an improved version of Donkey Kong Land III was released under the name Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong for the Game Boy Color . The Japanese version was sold around 280,000 times.

Game Boy Advance

Logo of the GBA game Donkey Kong Country 3

The corresponding version for the Game Boy Advance was also released on November 7, 2005 under the name Donkey Kong Country 3 . Unlike Donkey Kong Land III, the Game Boy Advance remake is a direct implementation of the SNES game. The plot and the gameplay have hardly been changed here and largely correspond to the SNES version.

However, the GBA remake contains various other changes. For example, there is a new world called Pacifica with additional levels. The final boss of this world is Barbos, who in the SNES original represents the final boss of the game world Gipfelgrat . This contains a new boss named Kroctopus in the GBA game.

Lives are saved in the GBA remake, and you can save there at any time in the start menu. Wrinkly's storage cave is therefore no longer necessary and is replaced by "Cranky's Dojo". In this dōjō you control Cranky Kong. The player must ward off opponents by wielding a shield. If Cranky is hit by an opponent, the game is over. A maximum of 30 opponents can be repulsed, if you are hit beforehand, a high score is saved. You get different prices for fending off. Swanky's gambling tent is no longer there either. Rather, the place where the gambling tents were in the SNES original is now “Swanky's Race”. In this game you can take part in a mini-game for a fee, in which you collect stars with Dixie Kong and avoid obstacles. In turn, prizes are awarded for collecting the stars.

A completely new bear named Bachelor appears in the GBA game . Funky Kong also offers four mini-games in its boat rental. In the minigame “Protector”, the Donkey Kong characters Candy , Chunky , Lanky and Tiny Kong , who do not appear in the SNES game , have a cameo . The GBA version has sold approx. 0.77 million times.

As of November 25, 2012, the games in the Donkey Kong Country series were temporarily no longer downloadable there. Memory images purchased up to that point were saved on the console and could be started and played unchanged, but they could not be purchased or downloaded again.
