The Drama Lexicon of the 18th Century is a one-volume reference work published by C. H. Beck in 2001 with entries on 250 German-language plays, which come from 108 different authors and were printed between 1700 and 1800. It was edited by Heide Hollmer (* 1959) and Albert Meier (* 1952).

criteria

The compendium is intended to convey a picture of the wealth of drama of the 18th century, beyond the works of authors still known today such as Gottsched, Lessing, Goethe or Schiller. The collection has - with restrictions - canonical character : "The primary criterion for the selection is the representativeness of the work: either because of contemporary success or as evidence of a genre that was popular at the time or an original formal experiment" (Preface, pp. 5–6).

Each of the lexicon texts provides a table of contents on one or two pages as well as notes on interpretation and an evaluation.

Submarine

Among the 250 entries there is also a "U-Boot", a bogus lexicon article . It concerns a playwright named "(Friedwart) Konrad Kasimir Pfaiffenberger" and his alleged prose comedy Gottgetreu, or the prevented crime of 1787 (see pp. 236-237).
