Dzeko & Torres was a Canadian DJ duo consisting of the two DJs and producers Julian Dzeko and Luis Raposo Torres. The duo celebrated their first successes in 2013 with the single Hey and in 2014 with a remix of the song Anywhere For You by the singer John Martin in collaboration with the DJ and producer Tiësto . With their new edition of the song L'amour toujours , they celebrated their first Beatport number one hit in 2015 . The duo is mainly active in the genres of big room and progressive house . Due to the mere use of the last names, it is often wrongly assumed that their pseudonym is based on the successful professional footballers Edin Dzeko and Fernando Torres . In December 2016, the duo ended their permanent collaboration.
history
2006–2010: foundation
The Dzeko & Torres project was first founded in 2006 by the two DJs Julian Dzeko and Luis Torres. They first met as teenagers on an online forum for club events in Toronto. Torres was a graphic designer and photographer at the time, while Dzeko was active in promoting events. Dzeko: “We both loved house music and when I saw Tiësto play live in front of 8,000 people in Toronto, I decided to buy some DJ equipment and teach myself to hang up. At the same time, Luis began to grapple with the production and we decided to learn from each other. ”In 2007 and 2008 they played at parties of all ages and made their first name in the Toronto club scene. They focused more and more on their interest in house music and its subgenres. A short time later they began to write their own tracks together and to co-produce them for well-known artists. In 2008 her first solo single Confronted was released , which was featured on Chuckie's compilation Dirty Dutch Digitale Vol. 4 .
2010–2012: Increasing awareness through remixes
Her second single Again was released in 2010 in collaboration with the Danish rapper Majid and contains a remix by the Canadian DJ Joe Ghost. Parallel to the release of a number of other singles, they opened numerous club concerts by larger DJs. This was followed by appearances in the Greater Toronto Area through to nightclubs in London (Ontario) . Little by little, well-known DJs became aware of them and there were guest appearances by Sebastian Ingrosso , Hardwell , Porter Robinson , Erick Morillo , Michael Woods and Quintino.
In early 2012 they released an unofficial remix of the song King and Lionheart by the Icelandic indie rock band Of Monsters and Men , best known for the song Little Talks . Your version of the track could advance to number 1 in the song charts of the MP3 music provider Hype Machine. The website “Top Sound” described the bootleg as “arsonist” and said: “The track surpasses any success of the top placements of all relevant, imaginable download evaluations. If you haven't made the acquaintance of Julian Dzeko and Luis Torres, you're missing out on one of Canada's most popular acts. Great, melodic and undeniable sounds, these guys simply add vitality to each of their tracks they work on. ”In collaboration with DJ and producer Michael Woods, they then released the song Diamond Rings on the record label“ Diffused Records ”and one Remix of Trey Songz's successful single Heart Attack on the label "Atlantic Records".
In October 2012, her first major solo success, Hey, appeared . The song was first played in Steve Aoki's "BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix 2012". Her songs were also used in the live sets of numerous musicians, including Tiësto on his “Club Life” tour and Paul Oakenfold 's “Planet Perfecto” tour. In David Guetta's radio show celebrated its until then unreleased track Togi premiere.
2012: Hey EP
After the single Hey was released , Steve Aoki asked the duo what they would think of producing a full EP together. This resulted in the Extended Play of the same name, which was released on December 18, 2012 via "Dim Mak Records". The music website "The Dancing Astronaut" wrote that the title track Hey has a permanent bassline and a continuous built-up to the bright synth-melodic drop. Elektro Daily described the song as an "excellent electro-house production": "The melody and the synth progressions provide the basis for the high-quality structure of the track, which leads you to the blood-rushing drop with bass."
The EP track Buppy first appeared in late autumn 2012 in various blogs. One of the first reviews was provided by EarMilk, who appealed to the song on its "very sophisticated tone grid". “The Dancing Astronaut” was also criticized again. The site wrote: "The song contains similar hard-hitting electro elements like Hey , but scores with a brighter, more pulsating built-up." Elektro Daily wrote that Buppy had a danceable, drop in it, combined with electro house and moombahton Elements. The last track of the EP is called Check This Out . The song shows the duo's progressive house side, combined with their electro house-heavy elements. "Dzeko described Check This Out as the duo's favorite EP track:" The song embodies a slightly different style than that we usually produce. It has a lot of inspiration from old school genres, including trance and hardstyle. "
2012–2014: international breakthrough
In December 2012 they signed a contract with America’s Best Music Booking Agency. At the same time, an official remix of the song Strange Attractor by the British indie rock band Animal Kingdom was released . In January 2013 the duo appeared in the web series "The Aoki-Files". They gave an interview in Miami.
After Dzeko & Torres had toured all of Europe and North America until the end of 2012, they performed at various festivals. In March 2013 she made her debut at the BPM Festival Mexico. This was followed by her first appearance in front of an audience of over 150 thousand. Dzeko & Torres gave this at the Ultra Music Festival . That same month the duo appeared at the Winter Music Conference . Further appearances in 2013 took place at the Chasing Summer Festival in Canada, the Electric Zoo Festival in New York City, Coachella and in front of over 200,000 visitors at one of the largest festivals worldwide, Tomorrowland in Belgium.
Dzeko & Torres celebrated another great success with a remix of the song Demons by the US band Imagine Dragons . The Progressive House remix received several million views from SoundCloud alone. Shortly afterwards, the duo began to get in touch with Tiësto . They agreed and a record deal with his record label "Musical Freedom" followed.
Work with Tiësto's record label began in April 2014. Several singles were released shortly afterwards. In 2014, an official music video of a remix of the song Anywhere For You by the Swedish singer-songwriter John Martin was released on the Internet . They produced the mix in collaboration with Tiësto . The video, which shows scenes from John Martin's original video and recordings of live performances by the three DJs, was viewed several million times after a year and increased Dzeko & Torres' population immensely. Also in 2014 the duo signed a contract with the label "Monstercat", an EDM label based in Vancouver, Canada. They also got a deal with the successful Dutch label " Spinnin 'Records ". In July 2014 they continued their tour with an appearance at the annual "White Party" in Salt Lake City .
2014-today: Worldwide success
In late autumn 2014 Dzeko & Torres brought the American DJ and producer Borgeous , known for the song Tsunami, into the studio. Together they started to produce a big room track. From this the song Tutankhamun developed . The official music video of the instrumental piece was uploaded from the official YouTube channel of the record label "Spinnin 'Records" and has been viewed several million times to date. At the same time, they also released the big room song Ganja together with MOTi . In February 2015 the solo single of the duo Alarm was released , which samples the currently again popular trance piece Sandstorm by the Finnish DJ Darude . The music video shows excerpts from the duo's tour. This was followed by the release of the progressive house track For You , which they recorded in collaboration with the American actor and DJ Maestro Harrell. The American singer-songwriter duo Delora contributed vocals. The progressive house track was released on March 22, 2015. At the same time, the official music video of the song was released in which all five musicians can be seen both in an amusement park and at a live performance.
On March 27, 2015 they played a new recording of the song L'amour toujours by the Italian DJ Gigi D'Agostino together with Tiësto live at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami . The day before, the duo played the track at a gig at the “Liv” nightclub in Miami. Rumor has it that the cover version is the duo's next single. A few days later, a fan-made music video of the song appeared on the Internet, which was viewed tens of thousands of times after just a few weeks and was promoted by Dzeko & Torres itself. The song received numerous positive reviews in advance, especially for the vocals of the American singer Delaney Jane. Before the song was released on September 7, 2015, the song Air was released as a single on May 11, 2015 . Delanay Jane also contributed the vocals here. After just a few days, the track was number 1 in the Beatport Top 100, where it stayed for several weeks.
2016: separation
At the end of 2016, Dzeko & Torres ended their long-term cooperation. Dzeko cited the reason that they had problems with the management of studio time and touring and this clashed with their own interests. Torres wanted to concentrate more on the studio work, while Dzeko found his passion more in hanging up. The first single after separation came from Dzeko and was released under the title Liberty . However, they said that they do not want to completely dissolve the project, but that the focus should only be on solo careers. Future collaborations were therefore not excluded.
Style and equipment
While they started out with tech house , their current style is progressive, electro and big room house. Their influences can be traced back to DJs like Avicii , Lazy Rich , Umek and Alesso . Torres explained her style: “We play and produce a combination of big room, electro and progressive house. But apart from our style, which we play and produce live, we also love genres like tech and deep house as well as indie rock and everything in between. "
Both members learned to mix with FL Studio software . Torres learned the piano before he started producing. He is also responsible for the keyboards. The duo use audio products from V-Moda, which is based in California. The company also compiles a list of what it sees as the top 200 DJs, including Dzeko & Torres.
