The Airbus CN-235 is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft from a joint project of the former Spanish CASA , merged into what is now Airbus Defense and Space , and the Indonesian IPTN . The consortium was named Airtech ( Aircraft Technology Industries , later expired).

From the CN-235, the CASA C-295 , which was extended by a good 3 meters and had its maiden flight in December 1998, was developed.

The development took place at CASA. The CN-235 MP was manufactured in Spain by CASA and the CN-235 MPA by IPTN in Indonesia.

The aircraft was designed as a maritime patrol aircraft . The individual copies are equipped with various control and monitoring devices depending on the requirements. The first flight took place in 1983; the first machines were put into service in 1988.

The CN-235 MP built by Casa are in service in Ireland, Turkey and Spain (also listed as C-235 by the Spanish military) and are equipped with the FLIR system FLIR-2000HP (infrared vision system ). The FLIR transmitter / receiver parts are easy to see under the aircraft nose. These machines also have a Northrop-Grumman-Litton display connected to an AN / ALR-86 (V) electronics support measurement system and an APS-504 (V) 5 radar.

In the contract with the Turkish government it was agreed that the CASA CN-235 MP would be manufactured by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Ankara. Between 1991 and 1998, TAI manufactured a total of 50 machines under license from CASA.

The Indonesia-made CN-235 MPA is used in Brunei , the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia. The Indonesian Navy has six aircraft and the Indonesian Air Force three aircraft. These machines are equipped with AMASCOS (Airborne Maritime Situation Control System) including manufactured by EADS Germany Ocean Master - search radar equipped.

Numerous civil versions of both types of aircraft were produced. More than 280 machines of all versions of the CN-235 are in use and have completed around 500,000 flight hours with several incidents .

In 2002, in cooperation with the Lockheed Martin / Northrop Grumman Group (USA), the version of the CN-235-300M was created, which is manufactured by CASA and equipped with an electronic flight management system with a liquid crystal multifunction display supplied by Rockwell Collins. The US Coast Guard , which calls the aircraft the HC-144A Ocean Sentry , is planning to purchase 36 aircraft. So far, 14 units are in use, the first of which was delivered in December 2006. Another machine was ordered in 2013 and will be delivered in 2015.

Due to the delays in the Airbus A400M , France initially ordered 19 CN-235-200s and increased the order by a further eight CN-235-300s in April 2010.

Since the integration of CASA's military aircraft division into Airbus Military , the C-235 has also been part of the Airbus product range .

Incidents

From the first flight in 1983 to January 2020, there were 14 total losses of CASA-235. 117 people were killed in 13 accidents. Extracts:

  • May 17, 2001; Malatya Province in Turkey; 35 people died
  • May 19, 2001; Ankara in Turkey; four soldiers died
  • On August 29, 2001, on board a CN-235-200 of Binter Mediterraneo ( aircraft registration EC-FBC ) on a flight from Melilla approaching Malaga airport , a fire warning for the left engine occurred . As a result, however, both engines were immediately switched off, whereupon the aircraft touched down in the approach lights and crashed into the embankment of a crossing road. Some of the passengers were locked in the rear part of the cabin for ten minutes until the door there could be opened. Of the 44 inmates, 4 were killed.
  • On 21 July 2005, a CN-235 crashed Indonesian Air Force (Code A-2301 ) while approaching the airfield Lhokseumawe-Malikussaleh near Medan (province of North Sumatra ab). Three of the 23 inmates were killed.
  • On February 26, 2016, a CN-235-220M made an emergency landing at the airport of Kuala Lumpur-Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah launched CN235-220M of the Malaysian Air Force (registration number M44-07 ) in shallow marsh waters off the coast of the Kuala Selangor district. The machine caught fire. All eight crew members survived the accident, but a fisherman drowned trying to help them.
  • On January 17, 2018, a CASA CN-235 of the Turkish Air Force (98-148) flew into a snow-covered hill near Hodulluca Mevkii, Yalvaç District, Esparta Province, and was destroyed. The machine was on a training flight to and from Eskişehir airfield . All three inmates died.
