ELEX

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

ELEX is an action role-playing game developedby Piranha Bytes , setin a post-apocalyptic game world characterizedby science-fantasy elements, for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Windows . The publisher of the game, THQ Nordic , advertises the game world as dark, uncompromising, complex and unusual. First announced at Gamescom 2015, the game was released on October 17, 2017.

action

160 years before the actual plot, a meteorite struck the planet Magalan. This caused destruction worldwide, which means that only comparatively few people survived. He also brought the unknown element Elex to the planet. In the course of these 160 years, different groups with different ideologies developed, who researched the Elex using different methods and thus received different benefits from it. They could use it as fuel for science fiction machines like mechs , process it into drugs (stims), consume it directly or reverse its properties and produce mana from it . It was mainly used as fuel by the clergy and the Albs, exclusively by the outlaws in the form of stims, only the berserkers had access as mana and only the Albs consumed Elex in its pure form. Even if the factions are hostile to each other, they trade in the new, convenient currency Elexit to a small extent .

The protagonist , Jax, is an aspiring commander of the Albs who is reverently referred to as "the beast of Xacor". As a fool he has increased logical thinking abilities and a strengthened body through the pure consumption of Elex, but loses all emotions as long as Elex is consumed. On a mission in his glider, Jax is shot down through a weak spot in the protective shield and falls. Although he survived the crash, his brother, Kallax, executes him for his failure on his mission. What Kallax did not notice at the time, Jax survived this execution too . But the ex-Alb is badly hit by an outlaw - Ray - robbed, including all combat equipment. All that remains for him now is an iron rod as a weapon and two healing potions . For the first time on such a protracted Elex withdrawal, Jax experiences emotions and thus has the opportunity to become even more human or to look for Elex again in order to act emotionally and logically .

The player is now forced to find their way around the world and join one of the three remaining major factions. All human beings, including these three factions who still fully possess their emotions, are called free human beings. Although they sometimes fight each other, the Albs are the enemy of all free people. They have set up converters throughout Magalan's play area , which Elex is supposed to extract from all life forms such as plants , mutants, humans, etc. in order to transport it to Xacor. Jax wants to regain his old strength as a beast of Xacor and sees the 3 factions only as a means to an end to get good equipment. Although Jax initially only had revenge in mind, through living with the so-called free people he learns more about the Albs and their leaders, the hybrids, and in the end he has to stand up for or against them. The hybrid reveals in a single conversation that the Elex only represents the harbinger for other beings, called the "knowing", and wants to prepare humanity for it by raising them to a higher level of evolution by means of the Elex.

Game world

The game world is part of Magalan, which is delimited in the south and west by a sea and in the north and east by mountains . In addition, the icy cold in the northern mountains and radioactivity in the west and east will kill the player should he still find a way through the mountains. In the sea, however, the player is teleported back a few meters. The world is coherent and has no loading zones at all, with faster PCs even when teleporting .

The game world is divided into 5 areas.

  • Edan , which is owned by the berserkers and has been transformed into a fertile forest by their mana. An industrial town / district was once located here , today mostly only brick ruins remain.
  • Abessa is north of Edan and can be considered a neutral area for all factions of the free people. Most of the separatists , splinter groups of the Albs, are also here . Abessa mainly consists of a highland overgrown with grass . Large parts of the area once seem to have been natural and agricultural areas .
  • Tavar is located southeast of Abessa, it is a desert area occupied by the outlaws . There are indications that this area was a desert even before the meteor impact , which was mainly used for military and scientific , but also for economic purposes.
  • Ignadon is north of Tavar. It is a volcanic and lava landscape , shaped by destroyed industrial and residential areas. The clerics set up their high-tech camp in a huge crevice .
  • Xacor is to the north of Abessa and to the northwest of Ignadon. The icy mountain landscape was occupied by the Albs and used to have a completely different climate zone . Elex has the ability to cool the environment. Since large amounts of Elex found their way to Xacor thanks to the Albs living there, the whole region cooled down so much that a winter landscape characterizes the picture all year round.

Animals , mutants, robots , bandits, and other hostile creatures can be found everywhere in the world . Depending on the type of opponent, the strength of that person is fixed and scaled e.g. B. not with the level of the player. The seemingly wild clusters of strong and weak monsters make it difficult for the player to get to the next safe place. Even the streets that were once considered reasonably safe in Piranha Bytes games are not in Elex. For this, the player receives a jetpack at the start of the game, which enables him to take routes beyond the norm, for example over an otherwise insurmountable mountain slope . But even with the jetpack, every initial step through the wilderness is daring. The only safe way to travel back and forth between the camps is offered by the teleporters distributed around the world, which can be used by the player permanently and free of charge via the map after one activation. Contrary to the previous games from the developer studio there in Elex a monster respawn , so that the world does not eventually die out if the player has all the monsters defeated.

Gameplay

The open-world - RPG is in the third-person perspective (freely rotatable follow cam) with mouse and keyboard or game controller played. There are four levels of difficulty easy, normal, difficult and ultra, although you can change the level of difficulty or parts of it at any time after starting the game. During the course of the game, the player has to join one of three factions that offer different armor and skills. Attributes and abilities of the game character can be increased after leveling up through attribute and learning points. While the attributes strength, constitution, dexterity, intelligence and cunning are to be increased as numerical values in the menu, a teacher must be consulted in order to learn skills. A wide variety of skills are available in seven different categories, each of which requires different attributes and, in addition to learning points, also costs the Elexit currency .

Combat in the game can be fought in close and long-range combat. The player has a wide variety of weapons at his disposal , such as swords , battle axes , chainsaw swords , rifles , energy weapons and bows . In ranged combat, the player can aim freely, as in third-person shooters . Strikes with melee weapons and evasive roles consume stamina, which must then regenerate. The shield can be used to block attacks as long as stamina is available. The jetpack can be used in long-range combat as well as close combat to gain distance from opponents. With the jetpack, a fall attack can be carried out on the opponent in close combat. However, so that the jetpack does not let the player become too overpowering, it is also available to some human opponents and most monsters also have options for long-range combat, such as spitting poison. A combo bar can be filled by stringing together melee attacks, which enables a strong special strike.

development

overview

Development of ELEX began in early 2014. The game was officially announced on July 2, 2015. However, the day before the game's teaser website was launched with a countdown. Winter 2016/2017 was specified as the release window. The first details about the game were revealed at Gamescom 2015. After there was only vague talk of a release in the course of 2017 in the further course of development, developer studio Piranha Bytes made a statement to the game magazine GameStar at the end of 2016 that the game should appear in spring 2017. In March 2017, however, the game was postponed: The third quarter of 2017 was now the talk. Another postponement took place in the summer when publisher THQ Nordic announced the final release date on October 17, 2017.

Design choices

According to the developers, after developing six role-playing games in a fantasy setting, one felt like science fiction .

“We want to get out of the corset. We mean that seriously. "

- Björn Pankratz : GameStar

The idea for science fiction and post-apocalypse had been around for a long time, according to game designer Björn Pankratz, this was already expressed using planned and implemented Easter eggs in earlier games, such as a rusting car. However, they didn't want to give the player a completely different feel. Years ago, the team toyed with the idea of “combining elements from fantasy and science fiction settings in a new game universe”.

According to the developers, the Elex fabric was inspired by the drug Spice from Frank Herbert ’s Dune universe, but at the same time the magic ore from the first Gothic was used . The developers named Star Wars and Mad Max as further sources of inspiration .

According to story writer Amadeus Weidmann, the aim was to give the player the opportunity to design his game the way he wanted it.

"Whether he prefers classic fantasy weapons such as fire swords or bows or prefers to roam the world with a rocket launcher is entirely up to him."

- Amadeus Weidmann : Spiegel Online

According to Björn Pankratz, the level of difficulty was largely based on the Gothic series. There are also influences from Dark Souls . The game was purposely intended to be as difficult as the Gothic series and not as accessible as Risen . With regard to the game world, the developers stated that it should be 1.5 times as large as that of Gothic 3 , the largest game world in a Piranha Bytes game to date. This size is necessary to realistically represent the areas in the game with forests, deserts, volcanic areas and snow-capped mountains including transition zones. A conscious decision was also made on a very reduced HUD and against an intrusive quest marker system in order to maintain the atmosphere.

According to story and quest designer Harald Iken, the implementation of the jetpack was a particular challenge for the developers. So it gives the player the opportunity to fly away from opponents, which is why they had to be given the opportunity for long-range combat. The flight duration of the jetpack was also limited. It also had an impact on the design of the game world. Iken says that they integrated a "domed city" protected by a force field into the game because they wanted to prevent the player from simply flying over the guards.

technology

As a game engine , Piranha Bytes again used the genome engine , which the studio had developed for Gothic 3 at the time and has since used and developed further in their games. A big change compared to the previous title Risen 3: Titan Lords was the change from DirectX 9 to DirectX 11 . In addition, various new techniques and effects such as tessellation for ELEX have been implemented. Since the previous two games Risen 2 and 3 played on several small islands, while ELEX provides a coherent world, including streaming the game world had to completely re- written to be. The entire game world can therefore be explored completely without loading times after loading it once.

Dubbing

In contrast to the two previous titles by the developer, no external company was commissioned to create the soundtrack . Instead, the game's music was composed personally by game designer Björn Pankratz, who also did the sound design. The soundtrack comprises 22 pieces of music and has a total length of 73 minutes.

The game has a dynamic music system in which, depending on the environment, time of day and situation, different pieces of music are played, which flow into one another. Quiet notes are played at night, while the music sounds more action-packed in combat.

For the synchronization of the main character Jax, the speaker Michael Lott stood in front of the microphone. Wardek, the protagonist's father, was voiced by Bodo Henkel , who had already dubbed leading roles in Piranha Bytes in earlier games. The voice recordings took place at m & s Tonstudio GmbH in Offenbach. Over forty voice actors were booked for three months.

Parallels to previous games

The game has some parallels to the universes of Gothic and Risen , which were also developed by Piranha Bytes. Many of the old voice actors also do the dubbing of the dialogues in the game Elex . Jax's father Wardek, for example, has the same voice actor as Xardas, the mentor of the nameless hero in Gothic : Bodo Henkel. Jack the lighthouse keeper found a way into the game including the lighthouse . It has been a recurring Easter Egg in games by Piranha Bytes since Gothic 2 . Monsters and plants also have a certain resemblance to those from the old game series: The biters in the game are similar to the scavengers, and the meat crickets have parallels to minecrawlers from the Gothic universe and tank crickets from Risen . Many plants even have the same name, such as the mana plant or the rare crown stump. Similar to the first Gothic there is no monetary currency, only material (Elexit) is traded.

Various Easter eggs from the development team can also be found in the game world.

In addition to the standard edition, the game was also offered in a collector's edition for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . In addition to the game, the Collector's Edition includes the following items:

Reviews

Both Dimitry Halley from GameStar and GamePro , as well as Eike Cramer from 4Players agree in their conclusion that Elex is the best game from the Piranha Bytes development studio since Gothic II .

The Games world praises the basic concept, however, criticized combat system and character customization.

PC Games magazine positively highlights the great game world. The combat system is reminiscent of Dark Souls thanks to the stamina bar, but is not so elegantly controlled.

"Elex develops a crazy pull effect after a few hours - if you haven't uninstalled it by then."

- Peter Bathge : PC Games review

According to the tester of Computer Bild Spiele, the "XXL role-playing game scores with great game world and playful freedom despite its quirks". The successful mix of fantasy and science fiction and the large scope with a lot of freedom are praised. The game world is atmospheric and the sound atmospheric, but the textures are partly out of date and the start of the game is partly frustrating.

"A role-playing game that one likes to sink into for hours!"

- Benedikt Plass-Fleßenkämper : Test report computer picture games

In a column on Buffed Elex is titled as an "uncut diamond in the rough". The author defends the entry into the game, which many players see as supposedly unfair.

According to the test by Bild.de , the jetpack adds a new dimension to combat and exploration. Piranha Bytes delivers "a great role-playing game that manages a mixture of sci-fi, fantasy and post-apocalypse with its world and its factions."

Spiegel Online highlights the game world as a major highlight of the game.

Above all, the standard compares it to earlier games from the developer studio and even speaks of Gothic 7 .

“It looks like the result of an amorous encounter between Gothic and Fallout . While both parents make an impact artistically and narrative, the child otherwise comes after its German mom. "

- Georg Pichler : The standard

The Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung calls ELEX a “surprise bag full of adventure”. The game, whose world falls between Mad Max and fantasy taverns , is not a flawless production, but a refreshingly different game.

Awards

Sales figures

In the first six months after publication, more than 100,000 copies of ELEX were sold on all platforms . As a result, the game received the game Sales Award from the association game in Gold in March 2018 . According to ZDF , the game had sold more than 100,000 times on Steam alone by April 2018 .

According to GamesWirtschaft.de, the game was exceptionally well received and the only game from Germany that achieved six-digit sales in this country in 2017.

According to an unintentional leak through a bug in Valve's Steam API, 254,457 players had the game on their Steam account on July 1, 2018. However, this number does not reflect the total number of sales, as the game was also released on GOG.com and for consoles.

successor

Although the development studio Piranha Bytes has not officially confirmed the work on a successor, there are indications of the development of ELEX 2 . In 2017, funding of € 150,000 from the European Union was awarded to AWinS 2011 GmbH & Co KG as part of the Creative Europe MEDIA funding program for ELEX 2 . The company AWinS 2011 GmbH & Co KG, which has existed since 2011, has its headquarters at the same address as the Essen developer Piranha Bytes, or its parent company Pluto 13 GmbH at the time, and also has the same managing director. The company has also appeared in the past in connection with ELEX and Piranha Bytes.

Without naming the title they are currently working on, Piranha Bytes announced on Twitter in December 2019 that they wanted to announce the upcoming game in 2020. In July 2020, industry news website GamesWirtschaft listed ELEX 2 for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One platforms as the game Piranha Bytes was currently working on.

Trivia

The game contains cameo appearances by the Rocket Beans employees and Game Two editors Michael Reinke and Michael Krogmann, who made a Let's Play for Gothic 2 , and the Game Two presenter and voice actress Lara Trautmann .
