Edmund Ludwig Freiherr von Hanstein , also Eduard (born November 17, 1808 in Marburg , † July 18, 1887 in Rothenbach ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Edmund was a son of the Hessian State Minister Carl von Hanstein (1772–1861) and his wife Wilhelmine, née Freiin von Haynau (1783–1866), a natural daughter of Landgrave Wilhelm IX. von Hessen-Kassel and the Rosa Dorothea Ritter . His brother August (1803–1878) was the Hessian state councilor and founder of the Hanstein-Knorr line.

Military career

Hanstein graduated from high school in Weilburg and joined the 29th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on May 10, 1825 as a volunteer . There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in mid-October 1828 and was assigned to the General War School in 1832/35 for further training . Subsequently, Hanstein served as a battalion and regimental adjutant . From mid-1843 to the beginning of June 1849 he was in command as adjutant of the 8th Landwehr Brigade in Erfurt , in the meantime became Prime Lieutenant and rose to captain on his return to his regiment in August 1849 . In January 1850 he was appointed company commander . With his promotion to major on April 14, 1857, Hanstein was transferred to the 26th Infantry Regiment in Magdeburg . On January 20, 1859, he was given command of the 1st Battalion and in mid-October 1861 was promoted to lieutenant colonel . He was then commissioned on August 12, 1863, initially with the command of the 1st Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 25 in Cologne under position à la suite . With promotion to Colonel Hanstein was born on September 22, 1863 commander of this association .

In 1866, at the beginning of the German War , Hanstein took part in the battle of Langensalza with two battalions from his regiment under General von Flies and was leader of a combined brigade during the Main Campaign , which he participated in the battles near Waldaschach , Oerlenbach , Neukirchen, Roßbrunn and Uettingen as well as commanded the bombardment of Würzburg . He was hereditary lord on Unterstein , Bornhagen-Steinhof and Rothenbach as well as Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John .

family

Hanstein married Anna von Hanstein (1820–1842) from Unterhof-Wahlhausen on April 6, 1842 in Beuern. After her untimely death he married Auguste Vitzthum von Eggersberg (1818–1888) on November 3, 1844 in Erxleben with Stadtilm . The following children were born from this marriage:
