English Rugby Union Championship 2016/17

The 2016/17 season of the English Premiership was the 30th major league season of the English Rugby Union Championship. For sponsorship reasons it was called Aviva Premiership . It began on September 2, 2016, consisted of 22 match days (a preliminary and a second round) and lasted until May 6, 2017. The four best-placed teams then qualified for the semi-finals, the semi-final winners met on May 27, 2017 in the final in Twickenham Stadium on top of each other. The Exeter Chiefs won the title for the first time .

    RFU Championship

    The season of the second division, the RFU Championship , comprised 22 game days (one first and one second round). While the worst-ranked team was relegated directly to the third division, the top four wore a playoff with a two-part semi-final and final. The final winner rose to the Premiership.

    1On December 23, 2016, a total of 20 points were deducted from the London Welsh for filing for bankruptcy. On January 24, 2017, the London Welsh was banned from further participation after the club failed to meet the RFU's requirements to renew their temporary license. All previous results of the club this season have been canceled.
