English Wine Producers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

English Wine Producers (EWP) is the association of English and Welsh winemakers. It includes more than 170 of the approximately 300 British wine producers . They have a planted area of 1884  hectares (as of the end of 2015) and achieve an average total annual production of 4.45 million bottles.

The proportion of sparkling wine is around two thirds. Although the community calls itself the Association of English Wine Producers - to which seven Welsh companies are affiliated - which only process their own agricultural products, a clear distinction must be made from British wine, which can also process imported grapes or grape juice concentrate. The total production averages 3.8 million bottles, but fluctuates strongly from year to year. In the last five years the production was: 2010 4 million, 2011 3 million, 2012 1 million, 2013 4.5 million and 2014 6.3 million bottles. All EWP wines bear a “Protected geographical status” logo, either Protected Geographical Indication ( PGI ) or the higher-quality Protected Designation of Origin PDO .

The association was launched in 2000 as a marketing channel for the wine industry. The association organizes the English Wine Week once a year - usually in the last week of May. Mike Roberts MBE was the founder and long-time president until 2014. There is also the United Kingdom Vineyards Association (UKVA), which, unlike the EWP, does not focus on the connection between wine producers and consumers, but rather on the connection between the wine industry and the governments in London and Brussels. The association has existed since 1990. The two associations work together on marketing issues and public relations.

Growing area

The production operations are practically spread across the country, with an emphasis on the traditional fruit-growing areas south of London . Specifically, there are 14 farms in Kent , 24 in Sussex , six in Surrey , seven in Dorset, 16 in Hampshire , three each in Wiltshire , Gloucestershire and Worcestershire , one on the Isle of Wight , five in Cornwall , and Devon and eight each in Somerset , four in Herefordshire , twelve in Berkshire , Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire together, 23 in the Midlands and the more northern counties, eleven in the region of north-east London ( East Anglia ) and one on the Channel Island of Isles of Scilly .

The two northernmost operations are north of York near the 54th  parallel (like Timmendorfer Strand ), the westernmost near Penzance . This northern location roughly corresponds to the extreme northern edge of the zone in Europe in which grapes can ripen at all.

Key figures

The three grape varieties Chardonnay (21.29%), Pinot Noir (19.51%) and Bacchus (9.11%) make up about half of the yield . Other important varieties are Seyval Blanc , Reichensteiner , Pinot Meunier , Müller-Thurgau , Madeleine Angevine and Rondo (GM 6494/5) . All other of the approximately 60 grape varieties permitted each make up less than 3 percent of the cultivation area (as of August 2012). The ten most cultivated grape varieties occupied an area of 1139.83 ha in 2011, which represented a share of almost 80 percent. Other permitted varieties, each with less than 1.5 hectares (corresponds to 1 per thousand of the total area), are: Zweigelt, Madeleine Sylvaner, Gamay, Optima, Albalonga, Gewurztraminer, Villaris, Findling, Cabernet Franc, Chasselas, Perle, Marechal Foch , Bolero, Ehrenfelser, Cascade, Blauburger, Manzoni Bianco, Cabernet Dorsa, Blauer Portugieser, Elbling White, Senator, Dalkauer, Heroldrebe, Nobling and Jubilaumsrebe
