Enzo Nicolás Pérez (born February 22, 1986 in Mendoza ) is an Argentine football player .

Club career

Enzo Pérez began his career in the youth team of his home club CD Godoy Cruz . With Godoy Cruz, which is the only professional club in his home province of Mendoza , he then signed his first professional contract in 2003, but did not make his appearances in the senior team until the Apertura 2004. From the Apertura 2005 he was a regular player in the right midfield and made it to the top Argentinian league for the 2006 season. There he developed into the star of the team with 5 goals in 30 games, which aroused the interest of larger Argentine clubs.

At Apertura 2007 he then moved to the big club Estudiantes de La Plata for a year on loan . In La Plata he got a regular place straight away and offered appealing performances at the side of veteran Juan Sebastián Verón . Among other things, he pushed the former top talent Diego Galván onto the bench. With Pablo Álvarez as defensive protection, he had a few freedoms in the offensive game of the team that he knew how to use. At the end of the season he finished with the team in third place in the table, only 4 points behind champions River Plate . He was then permanently committed by Godoy Cruz. This was followed by a rather disappointing 6th place in the table in the 2008/09 season, which was mainly due to the loss of substance after the departure of important players such as Álvarez or Pablo Piatti or Sebastián Domínguez . Nevertheless, they reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana during the season , which they lost 1-0 in the first leg and a 1-1 in the second leg against SC Internacional from Brazil.

Only when the squad for the Clausura 2009 was strengthened with high-quality players like Marcelo Carrusca or Clemente Rodríguez did they report back in the title fight in the Argentine league. Pérez had his strongest season to date, scoring 7 goals in 30 games. He also celebrated his biggest personal success, as Estudiantes with a total score of 2: 1 against Cruzeiro , the 2009 Copa Libertadores , won the the UEFA Champions League is comparable. In the past, there have been repeated rumors about a move to Europe around Pérez. In the summer of 2009, the SSC Napoli was named as a major prospect. Most recently, FC Porto was considered the most promising club for a move.

In June 2011, Pérez signed a five-year contract with Benfica Lisbon. This transfer cost the club around 5.5 million euros.

Due to a serious knee injury, Pérez only came to four appearances for Benfica Lisbon in 2011. In order to get more match practice, he was loaned to Estudiantes de La Plata in Argentina for the rest of the season after his injury. For the 2012/13 season he returned to Benfica Lisbon, where he developed into a regular player and played a major role in making it to the UEFA Europa League final.

At the turn of 2014/2015 Pérez joined the Spanish La Liga for Valencia .

In the summer of 2017 he moved back to Argentina to join River Plate , where he received a contract valid until June 2020.

National team

After above-average performance in the club, Pérez was appointed to the squad of the Argentine national football team for the first time in September 2009 by team boss Diego Maradona . The game took place as part of a screening course for local players. As a result, there were only players in the Argentina squad who are under contract with South American clubs. On September 24, 2009, he then made his debut in a friendly international match against Ghana . He was in the starting line-up in the final of the 2014 World Cup and was runner-up with the Argentine national team. Since Manuel Lanzini is out of the 2018 World Cup due to injury , he was nominated.
