Erick van Egeraat (born April 27, 1956 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch architect , author and head of an architectural office with offices in Rotterdam , Moscow , Budapest and Prague . In the course of his career he has built over 100 buildings and has received several international awards.

Professional background

Mecanoo

In the last year of studies at the Technical University of Delft Erick van Egeraat won in 1984 a competition for flexible young living on Kruisplein in Rotterdam, after which, together with Henk Döll he Francine Houben , Roelf Steenhuis and Chris de Weijer office "Mecanoo architecten bv" in Delft founded . The young company was active in various fields and soon gained recognition. In social housing in urban renewal areas, the “Hillekop” in Rotterdam (1986–1989) and “Herdenkingsplein” in Maastricht (1990–1994) stood out; "House 13" of the IGA Stuttgart 1993 (1990–1993), awarded the Hugo Häring Prize in 1994 and the BDA Prize for Good Buildings in 1994 . Also noteworthy is the small waterfront restaurant “Boompjes Pavilion” in Rotterdam (1990).

Erick van Egeraat associated architects (EEA)

"Tropenpunt" at the Mauritskade in Amsterdam (2002)

At the height of his success, Erick van Egeraat left Mecanoo in 1995 to work in his own office "Erick van Egeraat associated architects (EEA)" in Rotterdam: continuing to renovate the city, but no longer limited to social housing . The construction tasks now extended to teaching and research buildings ("InHolland" University of Applied Sciences in Rotterdam, 1996-2000), music ("Mezz" in Breda , 1996-2002), high-quality living ("Tropenpunt" at the Mauritskade in Amsterdam , 1996 –2002), administration ( Alphen aan den Rijn town hall , 1997–2002) and exhibition buildings (municipal art gallery in Cork , 1996–2000); Institute for Modern Art in Middlesbrough 2003–2007.

At the turn of the millennium there were a number of designs for Germany: residential development on Sternstrasse in Dresden (1994–1999), central station in Stuttgart and the surrounding area (1996), bank in Düsseldorf (1997), office and commercial building on Holzmarktstrasse in Berlin (2001), Gateway Gardens in Frankfurt am Main (2005). Stuttgart 21 is one of the most outstanding designs of this time in terms of urban planning and design (“a centuries-old sterile downtown desert in the city center of Stuttgart is being brought back to life”, according to the project description).

This was followed by the move to Central Europe and Russia , at that time still a blank spot for Western architects. According to Erick van Egeraat, in the country where “everything is so new and exciting, your senses wake up and you see what other people miss in their daily routine” - here you can truly become different because “you are in Central Europe far more open to the new ”. Erick van Egeraat followed his preference for working on the old buildings (office building extension of ING-Bank and NNH-Versicherung, 1993–1997; “Liget Center”, 2000–2002; “Déak Palota”, 2003–2004, all in Budapest ), for which he received wide recognition (“National Restoration award” for the office building of ING and NNH in Budapest, Hungary , 1999; “Life in Architecture Award” for the best building in Warsaw 2004–2005, for the Royal Dutch Embassy to Warsaw, Poland 2005; Reitter-Ferenc-Prize for the renovation "Déak Palota" in Budapest; "For Budapest Award" for architectural masterpieces in Budapest 2006).

The Russian designs also found recognition locally and internationally, for their professional sharpness, enthusiasm and creative handling of conditions (high-rise residential complex "Russian Avant-Garde" in Moscow, 2001; district repair "Rotoktober" factory in Moscow, ongoing since 2007), as well as for decidedly new design approaches ( “Capital City” skyscrapers in Moscow 2002–2010; “Barvikha Hills” villa suburbs near Moscow, 2004–2010).

(designed by) Erick van Egeraat

New Augusteum , University of Leipzig, part of the inner-city campus (2012)

In 2009 Erick van Egeraat reorganized his office under the name "(designed by) Erick van Egeraat bv" He responded to the global real estate crisis of 2007 with even more complex and richer architecture ; international competition wins proved he was right. As a result, a number of noteworthy buildings such as the Drents Museum in Assen , Netherlands (2007–2011), waste incineration plant in Roskilde , Denmark (2008–2013), “Columbuskwartier” in Almere , Netherlands (2008–2014), Sberbank Savings Academy at Moscow (2010-2013).

Two competition wins followed over ten years of work: on the “Sumatrakontor” office building (2006–2011), as part of the “Waterfront” master plan for Hamburg's Überseequartier (2004–2011) and on the main building of the Leipzig University's inner city campus (2004–2015). The university buildings are located where the former Gothic Paulinerkirche (13th century) was blown up at the behest of the GDR leadership in 1968, and refer to both the church and the demolition in terms of design and ideas, without denying its most recent date of construction. “In all of my work,” says Erick van Egeraat, “I try to escape rigidity. In the University Church of Leipzig z. B. the cleaning columns first ceramic and then glass-transparent. Some also hang from the ceiling, not quite reaching the floor - a good solution, I think, but not everyone shared the same opinion: they thought I was doing it for fun. In the design phase there was even a bit of a scandal, but everything has now been settled. I would think it would be nice if the builders left my planning as they are, and I would be very happy if the houses stood for 100 or even 200 years. "

With over 100 implemented designs in over ten countries around the world, Erick van Egeraat continues to work “respecting the area, looking ahead and fundamentally surprising”.

further activities

Designing in detail is a well-known weakness of Erick van Egeraat: In addition to interiors such as B. for the legal firm “De Brauw” in the office tower “The Rock” (2006–2009) or the public areas of the Mercury City Tower (2012–2013) also the objects he designed such as the vase “Black Max” (1997–1999) or door handle "Erick" (2008). “A vase”, says Erick van Egeraat, “is just as important as a house”.

Exhibitions have accompanied Erick van Egeraat from the start; in Germany he was represented with "For Russia with Love" (drafts for Moscow, in Berlin , 2003), "Masterplan" Überseequartier Hamburg, 2008), as well as "Paulinerkirche und (k) ein Ende" and "Kontrapunkte" (University drafts Leipzig, in Leipzig, 2004 and 2007). In the context of Augustplatz in Leipzig, “Kontrapunkte” referred to the house of another Dutch architect, Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856–1934), which was once there , and compared his and Erick van Egeraat's positions. At a distance of 100 years, both were innovative, but also contrapuntal.

Erick van Egeraat is a professor at the International Architecture Academy in Sofia , Bulgaria and performs worldwide with lectures, design workshops and master classes . Several books come from his pen, e. B. an architectural theoretical “Six ideas about architecture” (together with Deyan Sudjic), a building review “10 years Erick van Egeraat: realized works” (together with Philip Jodidio) and “Life without Beauty”, a provocative interplay of aesthetics and economy .
