etymology

The place name was first created in the form "Erlīna" as a description of the surrounding area, which had alder vegetation . The name comes either from the Old High German erila or from the Middle High German “er”. Around 1450 there was probably an adjustment to other place and field names (as elsewhere Eichig → Eichach), so that the name Erlach appeared. This is Middle High German and means alder bushes.

In the local variety of upper Frankish dialect the place name [reads mḝį.lįχ ] or [ mḝ.lįχ ], that is m ääi Lich or m ä Lich .
