Ernst Kuntze
Ernst Wilhelm Otto Kuntze (born December 8, 1850 in Hertwigswaldau , † January 22, 1932 ) was a Prussian infantry general .
Life
origin
He was the son of a bailiff and his wife Florentine, née Noack.
Military career
Kuntze graduated from high school and joined the Leib Grenadier Regiment (1st Brandenburg) No. 8 of the Prussian Army on July 29, 1870 during the war against France as a one-year volunteer . With this association he took part in the enclosure of Metz and the battles at Beaune-la-Rolande , Orléans and Le Mans . His achievements were honored by being awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class.
After the peace agreement Kuntze was on 13 May 1871 as Portepeefähnrich in the sixth Brandenburg Infantry Regiment. 52 were added and on 9 March 1872 to second lieutenant promoted. From October 1, 1874, he was adjutant of the Fusilier Battalion in Cottbus and shortly thereafter, on October 15, 1874, when he was transferred to the sea battalion, he transferred to the marine infantry . There Kuntze worked as an adjutant and court officer. On November 21, 1878 he returned to the army and was employed in the 1st Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 13 . As prime lieutenant , Kuntze served as regimental adjutant from January 5, 1881 to November 22, 1884 and was then transferred to Mannheim in the 2nd Baden Grenadier Regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm" No. 110 . On February 4, 1886, he was promoted to captain and appointed chief of the 5th company in Heidelberg . On July 16, 1891, Kuntze was ordered to serve at the War Ministry in Berlin and on October 18, 1891 he was promoted to major here. He served in the clothing department (B 3) and returned on November 17, 1896 as commander of the 2nd battalion in the infantry regiment "Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia" (2nd Magdeburgisches) No. 27 back into service . In this position, Kuntze was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 27, 1898 , and returned to the War Ministry on April 1, 1896. There he was now the head of the clothing department and on July 22, 1900, he became a colonel . From May 17, 1902 to April 23, 1904, he was employed as commander of the 1st Upper Alsatian Infantry Regiment No. 167 in Kassel . Then Kuntze was promoted to major general commander of the 41st Infantry Brigade in Mainz . On May 21, 1907 he was assigned to lead the 3rd Division and appointed Kuntze, while being promoted to Lieutenant General, in command of this large unit in Stettin . In the same capacity he was transferred to the 16th Division in Trier on February 18, 1908 . For his services, Kuntze received the star for the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with Oak Leaves from Wilhelm II on the occasion of the Order Festival in 1910 and the Order of the Crown, 1st Class, on the occasion of the Order Festival in 1911 . Granted the character of General of the Infantry, Kuntze was put up for disposal on April 21, 1911 with the statutory pension in approval of his resignation petition. He spent his retirement in Charlottenburg .
During the First World War , Kuntze was reused as a ZD officer. From April 6, 1915, he commanded the newly established 117th Infantry Division on the Western Front , with which he was initially engaged in trench warfare in Champagne . Kuntze took part in the battles at La Bassée and Arras as well as in the Somme . After his large formation had been relocated to the Eastern Front in mid-August 1916 , Kuntze was released from his command on August 26, 1916 and his mobilization order revoked. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the swords of the Order of the Crown, 1st Class.
