Ersa was discovered in 2018 by astronomers Scott S. Sheppard and Chad Trujillo on images dating back to March 25, 2017. It was temporarily given the designation S / 2018 J 1 and was named on August 23, 2019 by the International Astronomical Union after Ersa , the goddess of rope in Greek mythology .
