EuroBillTracker ( EBT ) is an international and non- commercial project that investigates the global migration of euro banknotes . To do this, users enter the serial number and printer code of their banknotes on the eurobilltracker.com website, as well as the location where they received them.

The name is made up of the currency Euro and the terms Bill ( AE : banknote ) and Tracker ( Engl. : Tracker , tracker). The populating of banknotes in the EBT database is in German as well tracken referred. If a ticket was recorded by more than one user, it is referred to as a hit or hit .

The project was inspired by Where's George , a similar website in the USA .

description

The combination of the value level and the serial number means that each banknote is unique . The migration of a banknote can be traced as soon as at least two people have entered their data together with the time and location. From this, EBT calculates how many kilometers (as the crow flies ) this ticket has covered in what time, shows the hike on a map and prepares the result statistically. In addition, with each entry, the page decrypts in which printer and for which country the ticket was printed.

There are also numerous statistics and rankings , e.g. B. about the most active users, cities , regions and countries , about their development over time or about which banknotes have covered the longest distances. Since each country is assigned its own range of serial numbers, EBT also provides information about the mix of banknotes and, since January 2002, has been showing monthly how the number of banknotes recorded in each country in the euro zone is distributed across the various national number ranges.

Since the diffusion of banknotes follows the same mathematical rules as the spread of particles or diseases , EBT is not only used as a hobby , but also as a data source for scientific , especially physical studies .

Overview

In December 2018, over 189,000 participants were registered and more than 182 million banknotes with a total value of over 3.35 billion euros were recorded. Over 1.05 million of these entries, statistically speaking about every 173rd, is a hit.

Most of the users are from Finland . This is where most of the hits are found, although by far the greatest number of notes are entered in Germany . Outside the euro zone , Switzerland is the most active country and occupies a higher position in the ranking than Cyprus , which uses the euro as the official currency.

In an international comparison of cities, Vienna leads by a large margin and has over 6.8 million entries. With over 1 million entries each, Berlin , Bochum , Frankfurt am Main , Groningen , Hagen , Helmbrechts , Helsinki , Hilden , Klagenfurt , Kouvola , Laibach , Munich , Nuremberg , Tampere and Lisbon are other strongholds of the project. (As of August 3, 2015)

Community

Although the tracking of the banknotes is largely anonymous ( an e-mail address is sufficient for registration ), an active community has developed via the associated Internet forum .

Since 2004 at least one large international meeting (EBTM) has taken place in a European metropolis, the venue of which is determined by the members. Barcelona was chosen for the 2011 summer meeting . The meeting on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of EBT in 2012 was held in Frankfurt am Main . In 2013 Rotterdam hosted the summer meeting. In addition, there are national and regional meetings across Europe at irregular intervals, as well as various round tables that are organized by members on site.

With the establishment of the non-profit association European Association of EuroBillTrackers as the operator of EBT, the project was placed on a broader basis. Those who want to help shape it have the opportunity to join the association. The annual fee is primarily used to finance web hosting .

Regardless of a formal membership, all functions of EBT are available to all users free of charge.

statistics

Statistics on the probability of a hit. Green indicates a higher probability. (As of June 2011)

The following table shows the number of notes entered, the number of hits and the probability of hits in the years 2002 to 2015. The hit rate is defined as the quotient of the number of hits divided by the number of notes entered. As the right picture shows, the hit probability varies from region to region. Countries with a high number of banknotes entered (such as Finland, the Netherlands or Belgium) have a significantly higher probability of being hit compared to countries with only a low entry rate (such as Greece or Ireland).

2002 531.074 159 1: 3340

Since the participants prefer to enter banknotes with low denominations, the probability of hits for these notes is highest (as of January 1, 2017):

history

EBT was started by the French programmer Philippe Girolami (Giro) and has been active since the introduction of euro cash on January 1, 2002. The first entry was made at 2:56 a.m. in Paris . The first certificate from the German-speaking area was entered in Hamburg on January 8th . Before that, there were already first activities in Belgium (January 5th) and the Netherlands (January 7th).

Anssi Johansson (Avij) has been running the site since 2003, which has been further developed since 2005 with additional support from Marko Schilde (Nerzhul). The webmasters are assisted by a number of active users who take care of translations, forum administration, email support and numerous other tasks. Over time, users of the site have developed additional programs with which extensive personal statistics can be generated or which filter their own database for entries that are of interest for various games in the EBT forum.

In September 2005, according to an entry from Liège , EBT comprised ten million registered banknotes and published an official press release in eight languages on the occasion .

A conflict arose on December 24, 2007 when Philippe Girolami's domain www.eurobilltracker.com was re-registered on a new server to which the other two webmasters had no access and where the entire website and database were copied without their knowledge had been. This was preceded by the fact that Girolami intended to commercialize the project through advertising banners, which was not approved by the other two webmasters. Johansson and Schilde then reactivated the previous server under the new domain www.eurobilltracker.eu . Thus there were temporarily two separate versions of the project, whereby the volunteers had announced that they would only work on the version under the .eu address.

In the following dispute, Girolami referred to his status as the domain owner and creator of EBT, while the other side argued that he had not taken care of the project for years and that the website had since been operated and financed by Johansson alone, and the vast majority Part of their source code now came from Schilde.

On January 3, 2008, the three webmasters met in Paris and agreed to merge the pages again and in Belgium a non-profit organization called the European Association of Euro Bill Tracker to found as registered owner of the domain, website and database to which the intellectual property of Eurobilltracker was transferred. Since January 12, 2008 the databases of both sides have been merged again and do not contain any advertising. Both domains point to the same server.
