The Expressway 10 ( Namhae Expressway , in German "Südsee-Autobahn") is an expressway in South Korea . The road is an east-west route through the south of the country, from the coastal region of Yeongam via Suncheon to Busan . Together with Expressway 25 , it is a major route along the coast of Gwangju , one of the country's larger cities. Busan is the second largest city in South Korea and has the fifth largest port in the world. The highway is 277 kilometers long.

Street description

The highway begins in Yeongnam in the extreme southwest of South Korea, near Mokpo . The highway has 2 × 2 lanes that run east through the mountainous south of the country and not far from the coast. There are a couple of smaller towns on this part of the route, like Jangheung . One reaches Suncheon, a city with 270,000 inhabitants, about 60 kilometers east of Gwangju. Expressway 25 is crossed here. The highway here has 2 × 2 lanes and leads through a mountainous, wooded area and winding river valleys that are typical of South Korea. The trail runs along Gwangyang with a small port, but here is one of the largest steel mills in the world. Expressway 10 has sections of concrete and asphalt. Despite its proximity to the sea, it is only sometimes visible as the mountains are over 1,300 meters high. The motorway therefore regularly has bridges and tunnels.

Near Jinju is an intersection with Expressway 35 , an important north-south highway that runs from the south coast via Daejeon and Seoul . The highway initially runs south of the city of Jinju and then turns inland. National route 2 , which also has 2 × 2 lanes, runs parallel to the motorway . The highway follows the valley of the Namgang River and reaches Changwon . In Changwon, Expressway 10 runs through the city, while Expressway 102 runs through the north of the city for transit to Busan. This city is also the starting point for Expressway 45 that goes to Daegu .

Changwon is a new industrial city with a population of 1,100,000. However, the only motorway runs through the northern area of the city and has 2 × 2 lanes. Expressway 102 closes again on the east side of the city. From this location the highway has 2 × 4 lanes up to the intersection with Expressway 104 , a feeder in the south of Busan. From Gimhae , the highway has 2 × 2 lanes again.

Busan is a large city of 3.6 million people, located on the Nakdong River . On the west side of town is an intersection with Expressway 55 , which runs north. The highway ends not much further west of Busan on a main road ( National Route 14 ) that continues to the city center and the port.

history

Construction of the highway began in 1972 to provide a connection with the port of Busan and the centers along the south coast of Korea. On November 14, 1973, the first section was opened near Busan. In 1978 construction began further west between Busan and Gwangyang. In 1981, a section with one lane was opened and the second lane in 1989. On December 16, 1993, the western section between Suncheon and Gwangyang was opened. In 2001 the section from Changwon between expressways 102 and 104 was widened to 2 × 4 lanes. On April 27, 2012, a 109-kilometer extension opened between Yeongnam and Suncheon.
