The Fürstenberg , located 71.6 meters above sea level , is a hill southeast of the city of Xanten , which also gave its name to the Fürstenberg monastery , which was formerly located there and of which only the “Kreuzkapelle” built in 1671/72 has been preserved. As early as 13/12 BC The Roman legion camp Vetera was built on the southern slope of the Fürstenberg . Part of the Fürstenberg, around 47 hectares , is now a nature reserve .
The Fürstenberg is part of a compression moraine that was formed in the Saale Ice Age and continues westwards over the “Hees” forest to the so-called “Sonsbeck Switzerland” southwest of Xanten, and to the east it forms a striking steep slope towards Bislicher Insel . The entire compression moraine is characterized by ravines and dry valleys . The Fürstenberg is mainly overgrown with beech , oak , ash and chestnut trees, while the western parts of the terminal moraine merge into agricultural areas. In the southern area there are isolated stream sources . The Fürstenberg is an important habitat for various rare animal species, including piped bats , green woodpeckers , redstart , nightingales , sparrowhawks and pied flycatchers as well as water frogs .
The "Garten Krautwig" located on the Fürstenberg shows an inner courtyard with myrtles and beech trees, a herb garden and a perennial garden on 1.5 hectares of a 130 year old farm. Chestnuts, a pond and many roses, some of which are rare, round off the garden on the street of garden art between the Rhine and the Maas .
