The inner city of Flensburg consists of the parishes of St. Nikolai , St. Marien and the Gertrudenviertel . This district of Flensburg is often misunderstandably called the old town by the administration , although the known oldest part of the city center , the Johannisviertel, is not included here. The more than one kilometer long pedestrian zone runs through the city center, stretching from Holm over Große Straße to Norderstraße .

history

The district to the Middle Ages

Around 1170, the parish of St. Marien was built on the west side of the Flensburg Fjord . The parish of St. Nikolai followed around 1200 . At the border of the two parishes, at the transition from Holm to Große Straße , a plaque set in the ground reminds of the historical center of the city, where the old town hall was located from 1445 to 1883 . In 1285 the Gertrudenviertel was added to the western part of the city. In the Middle Ages, this western part of the city, i.e. the Flensburg city center, was particularly well protected by the Flensburg city fortifications .

Trade in today's pedestrian zone

Nowadays, the Flensburg city center is characterized by brisk trade , many restaurants and cafés and numerous cultural institutions. Many of the shops and facilities have classic of Flensburg and quite straight-running shopping street settled that the Südermarkt north over the spar , the Great Road , the Nordermarkt and from there via the Norderstraße to Nordertor , the landmark of the town dates, with the busiest part is the spar. From Südermarkt it is only a few steps south to Rote Straße , which also consists of a shorter pedestrian zone with smaller shops and at the end of which is the Rathausplatz with the associated town hall . There are also many shops on Angelburger Strasse, which touches the Südermarkt . Many years ago, the merchants from the inner city area joined the IG Innenstadt e. V. merged.

The street Rote Straße - Holm - Große Straße - Norderstraße is next to Kieler Holstenstraße (since 1953) one of the oldest pedestrian zones in Germany, where the Holm was closed to traffic in 1968. There, the largest two shopping malls of the city settled: which opened on 11 September 1986 Holm Passage on spar 39 with over 15 stores and opened in November 2006 Flensburg Gallery on spar 59. In the Flensburg gallery spread over 20,000 sqm over 70 shops on three floors. In the entrance area on the Holm there is a half-timbered house integrated into the passage, the listed Steinbach House , built around 1500 , and on the top floor of the Flensburg Gallery , users of the Flensburg City Library can choose from around 120,000 media. Not far away from the Holm and the beginnings of the Große Straße, which is also still quite busy, despite the vacancy that is now spreading , is Flensburg's ZOB , Germany's first bus station since 1927 , where UCI Kinowelt , the city's largest cinema, is also located.

Norderstrasse

Norderstraße ( Danish Nørregade ), in which Danish cultural and educational institutions such as Aktivitetshuset (No. 49), Danish Library (No. 59) and Flensborghus (No. 76) are located, is the further north you go comes, commercially less busy. In the last few years, many shops there have given up and the street is more used for tourism, in particular to visit thephenomenta and the Nordertor. The street where the pedestrian zone ends is paved with cobblestones and traffic-calmed in this way, so that passers-by can continue a relaxed stroll through the few shops that can still be found in this area. The Flensburg harbor with the ship bridge is not far away from here, accessible via cross streets such as the Herrenstall or the picturesque Oluf-Samson-Gang , formerly known as the “ Sin Mile ”, built with fishermen's houses .

Center function and competitive situation

As the center of Flensburg, the Flensburg city center dominates a large part of the trade. Various supermarkets spread across the city also provide local supplies for the individual districts. The only major intermediate center of the city is the Twedter Plack . The Ochsenmarkt is a very small district center that is otherwise a bit similar to Twedter Plack in terms of its function and shape . Otherwise, the Citti-Park is very centrally located . It is located in the Friedenshügel district , between the Weiche district (Flensburg) , the suburbs Harrislee and Handewitt . In contrast to the Citti-Park , the Fördepark is located on the green meadow, on the edge of the commercial area in the southern part of the city . The Fördepark is located near the west and east bypasses and thus siphons off the purchasing power of arriving customers who come to Flensburg by car.

various

Since the Flensburg city center lies below the rising east and west banks of the fjord , it is also said nowadays when someone, for example, from Westliche Höhe or from Mürwik to the center of the city wants that person to be on their way "down to town".

In 2014 the local company run took place on a route through the city center .
