Francis Townsend "Frank" Hunter (born June 28, 1894 in New York , † December 2, 1981 in Palm Beach , Florida ) was an American tennis player .

Career

In 1916, Hunter graduated from Cornell University .

In 1923 he was in the final of Wimbledon . Hunter lost against the American Bill Johnston in three straight sets with 0: 6, 3: 6 and 1: 6. In doubles he won in 1924 with Vincent Richards against the Americans Richard Williams and Watson Washburn in five sets with 6: 3, 3: 6, 8:10, 8: 6 and 6: 3. He was able to repeat this success in 1927 with Bill Tilden . They defeated the French Henri Cochet and Jacques Brugnon in five sets with 1: 6, 4: 6, 8: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4, after Hunter beat the two in the final of the 1924 Summer Olympics together with Vincent Richards . He won the mixed doubles competition in 1927 with Elizabeth Ryan in straight sets 8: 6 and 6: 0 against Leslie Godfree and Kathleen McKane Godfree and in 1929 with Helen Wills Moody against Ian Collins and Joan Fry in straight sets 6: 1 and 6: 4.

In 1927, Frank Hunter and Bill Tilden won the American Tennis Championships in doubles against their compatriots William Johnston and Richard Norris Williams in three sets 10-8, 6-3 and 6-3. In singles he reached the finals in 1928 and 1929, but lost against Cochet in five sets with 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 3, 5: 7 and 3: 6, and against Tilden in five sets with 6: 3, 3 : 6, 6: 4, 2: 6 and 4: 6.

At the French mixed tennis championships , he made two finals. In 1928 he lost with Helen Wills Moody Eileen Bennett Whittingstall and Henri Cochet in three sets with 6: 3, 3: 6 and 3: 6. In 1929 there was a new edition of the final from the previous year. Hunter and Wills Moody lost in straight sets 6-3 and 6-2.

Hunter was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1961 .
