Freddie Roach (boxing trainer)
Freddie Roach (born March 5, 1960 in Dedham , Massachusetts , USA ) is a former American boxer and one of the best boxing trainers (also currently active boxing trainer) of all time, which is why his boxing career seems extremely modest compared to his coaching career.
Roach as a boxer
Under the guidance of legendary coach Eddie Futch , Roach was able to make his first 10 fights victorious. In the 11th fight he suffered his first defeat. In 1981, he won the USA New England title in the featherweight ; this title was also the only one he could win. His last fight he lost in 1986 against the unbeaten David Rivello by majority decision over 12 rounds on points.
Coaching career
After retiring as an active boxer, Roach worked in a variety of jobs in Las Vegas including telemarketing and as an assistant waiter before accepting a job as an unpaid assistant with former trainer and mentor Eddie Futch in 1986 . He was convincing in his new position and worked as Eddie Futch's assistant for five years. In 1991, actor Mickey Rourke (Mickey Rourke) decided to turn to professional boxing and hired Roach to train him in Hollywood , California . In 1995, when Rourke finished his boxing career, he gave Roach all equipment for the boxing stable he was training in. This became the famous Wild Card Gym.
Parkinson's Disease
Since 1990 Freddie Roach showed the first signs of Parkinson's disease , which got worse over the years. As described in the HBO series Real Sports starring Bryant Gumbel, he is able to actively control the disease through drugs, injections, and his training from boxers. Roach's doctors confirm that his coaching activities, due to the high demands on his hand-eye coordination, help slow the progression of the disease.
