Match reports
Alongside France , Belgium and the USA, Mexico was one of the four teams to play the first ever World Cup. On July 13, 1930, the first two games in World Cup history were kicked off at the same time at 3:00 p.m. (Montevideo time): in the Estadio Pocitos the group A preliminary match between France and Mexico (4: 1) and in Parque Central the game of the Group D between the USA and Belgium (3-0).
Lucien Laurent's 1-0 goal for France in the 19th minute went down as the first World Cup goal in history, making Mexican Óscar Bonfiglio the first goalkeeper in World Cup history to concede a goal. Juan Carreño's goal to make it 3-1 from Mexico's point of view in the 70th minute was also the first goal in Mexico's World Cup history.
France goalkeeper Alex Thépot collided with Mexican striker Hilario López in the 23rd minute, injuring himself so badly that he could no longer play. Because no player changes were possible at that time, the French had to play with only ten men for the rest of the time and midfielder Augustin Chantrel guarded the goal. Although it was only 1-0 at the time of their decimation, France won the game, which was largely outnumbered, with a clear 4-1. For Ernesto Sota , the head of the Mexican delegation at the time, the reason for this defeat was quickly found: “The cold stole our players' energy.” Mexican coach Juan Luque de Serrallonga had a different view of things. For him, goalkeeper Bonfiglio was the main culprit for the high defeat, so he replaced him with Isidoro Sota (brother of Ernesto Sota) in the next game.
After Manuel Rosas Sánchez "el Chaquetas" had played the first two World Cup games in his regular position in defense (and he made an own goal in the game against Chile ), he was ordered by coach Serrallonga in the last game against Argentina. Rosas scored two goals in the game, making him Mexico's first double goalscorer in a World Cup game. He also scored the first penalty goal in World Cup history to make it 1: 3 in the 42nd minute . In the same game, there had already been a penalty in the 23rd minute, but it could not be converted because Bonfiglio, who was re-established for the game, was able to save the penalty kicked by Paternóster . In the 65th minute there was another penalty for the Mexicans. On the first attempt, Rosas failed at the Argentine goalkeeper Bossio before he could convert in the margin.
