Soccer World Cup 2002 / Senegal
This article covers the Senegalese national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea .
qualification
Senegal faced Benin in the first round. It was only just possible to prevail and qualify for the second round.
In the second round, Morocco , Egypt and Algeria were drawn from three teams that were rated higher. The group was completed by Namibia . At the beginning of the qualification, three draws were played against the three favorite teams. After defeating Namibia and Algeria, qualifying for the World Cup was a long way off due to a defeat against Egypt on the third last match day. With a surprising win against Morocco on the penultimate match day and a win against Namibia on the last match day, with the better placed Egypt against Algeria only reaching a draw, Senegal managed to take part in a World Cup finals for the first time thanks to the better goal difference against Morocco.

Preliminary round
Senegal came as runner-up Africa champion, but was an outsider in Group A. Against world champions France , Denmark and Uruguay , hardly anyone expected that Senegal would survive the preliminary round. But Senegal already surprised in the opening game of the World Cup. You could beat France 1-0. The outstanding man was El-Hadji Diouf , who prepared the goal of the day and repeatedly caused danger. On the second match day the team confirmed their performance against France and reached a draw against Denmark. A draw against Uruguay on the last day of the match was enough, Uruguay, for its part, would have needed a win to advance to the round of 16.
In a dramatic match, Senegal led 3-0 at the break, before Uruguay followed suit and even managed to equalize in the 88th minute. Nevertheless, it was enough for Senegal to reach the last sixteen.

Finals
In the last sixteen they met Sweden, the winner from the “group of deaths” (England, Argentina, Nigeria). After 90 minutes the score was 1: 1, so the game went into overtime. With his second goal of the game in the 104th minute, Henri Camara ensured that Senegal advanced to the quarter-finals with a golden goal .
The quarter-finals against Turkey, however, ended. After an even game they had to go into extra time, in which Turkey scored a golden goal.
