Fouad Boutros Ibrahim Twal ( Arabic فؤاد طوال Fu'ād Tuwāl , DMG Fuʾād Ṭuwāl ; * October 23, 1940 in Madaba , Jordan ) is emeritus Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem . From 2008 to 2016 he was Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

Life

Fouad Twal was born the fifth of nine children and entered the seminary in Beit Jala in 1959 . He was ordained a priest on June 29, 1966 . After five years of pastoral work in Palestine and Jordan , he studied canon and international law from 1972 at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome and then for two years at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy . In 1976 he received his doctorate with a dissertation in canon law on traditional Bedouin law.

Twal entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1977 and in 1978 became Chargé d'affaires and head of the Apostolic Nunciature in Honduras . From 1982 to 1985 he was in the Council for Political Affairs of the Vatican State Secretariat responsible for 19 French-speaking African countries. In 1985 he took over the leadership of the Nunciature in Cairo , Egypt ; In 1988 he moved to Bonn in Germany and in 1990 to Lima in Peru .

In 1992 he was appointed prelate of Tunis by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination received his Patriarch Michel Sabbah on 22 July 1992; Co - consecrators were Archbishop Edmond Y. Farhat and Archbishop Francesco Monterisi . On May 31, 1995, when the territorial prelature of Tunis was elevated to the status of a diocese , Twal became its first diocesan bishop and as such received the title of archbishop ad personam . In 2003 he was elected President of the North African Bishops' Conference (CERNA) .

On September 8, 2005 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as coadjutor of the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Michel Sabbah, with the right of succession. Successor of Twal in Tunis was Bishop Maroun Lahham . On June 21, 2008, through the Pope's acceptance of the resignation of his predecessor, he was named Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem . He received the pallium on June 29, 2008 ; official salutation is "His Beatitude".

Fouad Twal has been a member of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue since 2007 and a member of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches since 2009 . He chairs both the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries in the Holy Land and the Conference of Latin Bishops in the Arab Regions (CELRA).

He was President of the Catholic University of Bethlehem from 2006 to 2009 .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on June 24, 2016.
