Georg von Cölln (entrepreneur)
Georg von Cölln (born May 9, 1837 in Bevensen ; † March 6, 1908 in Hanover ) was a German businessman and entrepreneur as well as the author of a family genealogy . Under the leadership of the Kommerzienrat , the Georg von Cölln, hardware store named after him, became an international company from which today's SEH Engineering GmbH emerged .
Life
Born in 1837 the son of a merchant and landowner , visited Georg von Cölln first the former grammar school in Lüneburg , a branch of the Johanneum Lüneburg , then completed a commercial apprenticeship in Winsen (Luhe) and then as a clerk operates only in Harburg , then in Hamburg .
In 1860 Georg von Cölln joined the local hardware store Franz Juncken & Co. in Hanover , which, together with the bank Ephraim Meyer & Sohn, had already been involved in the founding of the Hanoverian iron foundry and machine factory in 1857 . In addition, von Cölln heard lectures at the Hanover Polytechnic and undertook information trips at home and abroad. In 1861 he received power of attorney for the hardware store, which he took over and ran in 1863 together with HAG Woltereck .
In 1872 Georg von Cölln took over sole management of the company, which he renamed Georg von Cölln, Eisenwarenhandlung from 1877 , and which he developed from an initially only locally important company to a company known far beyond the borders of Germany.
Georg von Cölln was considered one of the most respected and active entrepreneurs of his time in Hanover. He sat, partly as chairman , on the supervisory boards of several companies and held numerous honorary positions. In 1888 he became a member of the Calenberg-Grubenhagen landscape for the city of Hanover , and in 1889 he was appointed to the Prussian Council of Commerce . After von Cölln became Vice-President of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce in 1891 , he then headed the Chamber from 1895 to 1900 as its President.
The mausoleum of the von Cölln family can be found in the Engesohde city cemetery .
Only after the entrepreneur's death was the Georg von Cölln hardware store converted into a GmbH in 1912, in which Friedrich Krupp AG then took a stake. The company later traded as Krupp Stahlbau Hannover , was taken over by the Eiffage Group in 2007 and is now known as SEH Engineering .
The Georg von Cölln House , which was built by the architect Rudolf Friedrich from 1911 to 1913 and is now a listed building at Am Markte 8 opposite the Marktkirche , was decorated by the sculptor Ludwig Vierthaler with various coats of arms that were important for the company .
