To the department

The department was founded in 1918, during the First World War , during the term of office of the Hussarek Ministry , the penultimate government in the western part of Austria-Hungary known as Cisleithanien , as the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Public Health , the first such ministry in Europe. The ministry was established on July 27, 1918, and the first minister, Ivan Horbaczewski , was appointed by Emperor Charles I on July 30, 1918. Having been entrusted with the preparatory work for the new department, Horbaczewski had been a member of the previous government, the Seidler Ministry , since August 30, 1917 as a minister without portfolio.

Since the monarchy collapsed in the autumn of 1918, the ministers were dismissed by the emperor in one of his last official acts on November 11, 1918 and no successors were appointed. On October 30, 1918, the new Austrian republican state (then called German Austria ) was founded without the participation of the emperor and the first government was installed from November 12, 1918 . The State Office for Public Health was run. Then in 1920 the agendas went to the State Office / Federal Ministry for People's Nutrition , which was more important in times of need , in 1923 to the Federal Ministry for Social Administration , and from 1945–49 again to the Federal Minister for People's Nutrition.

In the Republic of Austria, health agendas were carried out by the Ministry of Social Affairs until, in 1972, Bruno Kreisky set up a separate ministry for this in the Kreisky II federal government . Since then, the portfolio has been consistently combined with other departments; in 2008–16 there was again a minister exclusively for health affairs.
