Gifford is a census-designated place (CDP) in Indian River County in the US state of Florida with 9590 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Gifford is bordered by the towns of Vero Beach to the south and Indian River Shores to the east. The CDP is located around 150 km southeast of Orlando . To the east of Gifford runs the Indian River , part of the Intracoastal Waterway on the east coast of Florida.

The CDP is crossed by US Highway 1 and the Florida East Coast Railway .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 9,590 inhabitants were distributed over 5,475 households. The population density was 524 inh. / Km². 49.7% of the population identified themselves as white, 43.7% as African-American , 0.3% as Native American and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 4.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.5% to several ethnic groups. 8.5% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 23.7% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 46.6% of all households. 56.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.18 people and the average family size was 2.88 people.

21.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 33.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 47 years. 47.0% of the population were male and 53.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 28,616, with 28.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 91.79% of the population, 7.26% spoke Spanish and 0.94% spoke Haitian .
