Glass is a thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan . The film is a sequel to Split from 2016, which is a separate sequel to Unbreakable from 2000. The film was released in German cinemas on January 17, 2019 and in US cinemas on January 18, 2019.

action

Kevin Wendell Crumb, a young man with multiple personality disorder , is still at large and highly dangerous when "the beast," a physically vigorous and essentially animal personality, emerges in him. This takes the view that only people who have experienced suffering are "clean", and demands people who, in its opinion, are "unclean" as an offering , which they then eat. At first only a few of the total of 23 other identities Crumbs were on her side, but she manages to convince more and more of her cause. "The Beast" and its followers call themselves "the Horde".

David Dunn is a man of superhuman abilities. He is invulnerable, unusually strong, and can tell the evil side of other people through touch. Its only weak point is water, to which it reacts just like ordinary people. He spends much of his time trying to chase wrapped in a raincoat criminals why he as perpetrators of vigilante justice is sought by the authorities. He is supported in his work by his son Joseph, with whom he maintains radio contact. In a television report, he learns of Kevin's actions and therefore clings to his heels to stop him. In the meantime he has kidnapped four young women as victims for "the beast" who are chained up in an old brick factory and gradually get to know his various personalities. When Dunn runs into Kevin during one of his patrols and accidentally touches him, he has a vision that shows him where the girls are. After they are freed, there is a fight with the "beast", but both are discovered and captured by the police.

You'll find yourself at the Raven Hill Memorial Psychiatric Research Center, a facility run by psychiatrist Dr. Ellie Staple, who specializes in individuals who believe they are superheroes. Dunn is held in place with high pressure nozzles, which flood his room with water in an emergency. Kevin is kept under control with hypnosis light, strong flashing light that forces him to change his personality should a dangerous identity take control of his body.

Elijah Price, who calls himself "Mr. Glass", is also in the facility. He suffers from vitreous bone disease and is dependent on a wheelchair due to numerous fractures. The highly intelligent man is convinced that the stories from comic books go back to real models. Price is David Dunn's previous mentor who led him to recognize his superpowers. He was put behind bars by the latter, however, after seeing through a touch in a vision that Price intentionally caused several fatal accidents in search of a superhero in order to locate an invulnerable person. Because of his razor-sharp mind and skill as a shrewd tactician, the highly dangerous Price is sedated with sedatives .

Staple tries to convince the whole world that there are no superhuman powers and that the three patients only have a specific mental illness. In a group session, she succeeds in sowing doubts about their own superpower in Dunn and individual personalities of Crumb. Each of the inmates receives regular visits from one person: Price from his mother, Dunn from his son and Crumb from Casey, who abducted "the Horde" earlier but which was then released by the "beast" than that of Recognized the young woman's past marked by suffering.

Elijah Price has since stopped his medication unnoticed and speaks to Crumb one night to tell him that he thinks he sees superpowers in the "Beast" too. Since the numerous surveillance cameras clearly show that Price has left his cell, an intervention on his brain that is actually scheduled for a later appointment will be carried out the next day. However, he previously managed to manipulate the machine in such a way that it had no effect. Shortly thereafter, he uses a piece of glass to kill a guard and free Kevin Crumb, whom he can convince to reveal to the world that superheroes and villains live among them. For this, however, the help of David Dunn would be necessary, who would have to face the "beast" in public. However, since the latter has now lost his faith in his own strength, Price appeals to his protective instincts by telling him that he will attempt an assassination attempt at the opening ceremony of a high-rise building. Through the abilities of the "beast" the two villains manage to escape from the institution, and Dunn, who regains his strength through his will to prevent the attack, manages to break out of his cell and face his enemies .

All of the main characters clash outside the facility when Casey, Joseph, and Mrs. Price arrive at the scene while Dr. Pile armed men gathered to fight the fugitive inmates. Joseph, who is now researching Kevin Crumb, reveals to him that his father died in one of the calamities that Elijah Price arranged - the same one that David Dunn was the only one to survive. After his father died, Crumb's mother began abusing him, which gave rise to his diverse personalities. "The Beast" then fatally wounds Price and pushes Dunn into a water tank, which weakens him, but then turns back into the physically much less robust Kevin, who is finally killed by Staple's men. Shortly afterwards, one of them begins to drown Dunn in a puddle. The doctor reveals to him in his final moments that she has spent most of her career preventing superheroes from revealing themselves to the world. It turns out to be part of a secret organization that has been trying for 10,000 years to track down people with superhuman powers so that there are no gods on earth. So far they have been successful.

However, the cameras in the mental hospital had previously been hacked by Elijah so that the footage of Casey, Mrs. Price and Joseph could be distributed, revealing the existence of people with superhuman abilities. Staple is shocked that the public now knows about the superheroes they fought to keep secret. Their plans and those of the secret society have been thwarted.

production

History of origin

The film is a sequel to Split from 2016 and Unbreakable from 2000, in which characters from both films meet. All three films are therefore located in the same cinematic universe. Glass forms the last part of this trilogy, the so-called "Eastrail 177" trilogy, and is intended to connect and continue all films beyond what has been suggested so far.

In the short final scene of Split , several guests in a restaurant watch a television report about Kevin's actions. When a woman points out the parallels to other crimes planned by a man in a wheelchair 15 years ago, the guest next to her reminds her with the name tag Dunn that the wheelchair user was a certain Mr. Glass. The surprising reunion with Bruce Willis' character David Dunn from Unbreakable revealed that Split was an offshoot of this film. Glass , the film title of the third part, alludes to the villain and comic lover Elijah Price.

Bar, film genre and construction

The director was again M. Night Shyamalan , who also wrote the screenplay for the film. Shyamalan has directed the two previous films. In April 2018, at Cinema Con 2018, the director revealed that his new film would combine the “thriller genre and comic genre” to create the “first truly grounded comic film”. At the same time, Shyamalan's aim was that each of the films should be able to stand on its own two feet. While Split and Unbreakable were considered horror thrillers, Glass was marketed as a superhero film . In an interview with Collider, producer Jason Blum tried to differentiate the film from the usual Marvel scheme: “ [Glass] is a kind of superhero film. For me he is. He is very different. I would say it's not a Marvel movie, but a superhero movie. "

As in the two previous films, there is again good and bad in Glass . Shyamalan lets Mr. Glass follow the same plan in the movie that he had in Unbreakable . He wants to prove to the world that superheroes exist and for this reason he provokes horrors and crimes. In Glass initially everything looks as if he wants to stage a bombastic duel between Dunn and Crumb on the tallest skyscraper in Philadelphia, which can be followed by the whole world. Shyamalan has given each of his three supposed superheroes their own weak points. Elijah with a glass bone disease from birth, Kevin Crumb with a multiple personality, inside of which is a 9-year-old who doesn't want to get older and should actually be protected by the other personalities, and David Dunn has been fearful since childhood Water, which almost paralyzes him and ultimately makes him defenseless. The viewer is asked whether he should believe in the superheroes in Shayamalan's film world or take the side of the doctors: “In the last act of the film, he leaves his three characters Mr. Glass, Kevin and David Dunn in one compete against each other in the only gray area, it stages them sometimes heroically, sometimes poorly and thereby creates an ambivalent climax ”, says Daniel Krüger from Musikexpress .

Cast and filming

The actors Bruce Willis , Samuel L. Jackson and James McAvoy took over the roles of David Dunn, Elijah Price alias Mr. Glass and Kevin Crumb and thus play the characters known from the two previous films. Anya Taylor-Joy took on the role of Casey Cooke. Shyamalan can be seen in a cameo as a customer in Dunn's shop.

Sarah Paulson is a new addition to the Shyamalan verse in the role of therapist Dr. Ellie Staple who specializes in individuals who believe they are superheroes. She interviews the trio in the film and wants to make it clear to her three cases of hardship that her madness is above all a compensation that arises from the need to escape her own weaknesses and trauma, says Felicitas Kleiner from the film service . Dr. Staple tries to bring the seemingly supernatural back down to earth: “She exposes Kevin's multiple personalities as illness, his strength as not that strong at all, and his shotgun survival as luck and wet gunpowder. David Dunn's skills are also grounded by her as a mixture of intuition, luck and workout, ”says Daniel Krüger. Staple not only cast doubts for heroes and villains, but also for the audience.

Filming in Philadelphia ended in early December 2017 . Glass also draws on unused footage from Unbreakable , such as a scene in which Dunn enters his son's room and another in which he is on the same train as Kevin's father.

Film music, marketing and publishing

The score was composed by West Dylan Thordson . The soundtrack for the film was released for download on January 18, 2019 by Back Lot Music. He also used music by James Newton Howard for the film Unbreakable .

A first trailer was presented at CinemaCon in April 2018. A first official teaser poster followed at the beginning of July 2018, with the tagline “You can't contain what you are” (for “You can't hold back what you are”). Another teaser followed in mid-July 2018, a few days later a first long trailer. Shyamalan wanted to present a preview at the Sitges Film Festival in October 2018. The film was released in German cinemas on January 17, 2019 and in US cinemas on January 18, 2019.

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, the film was approved for people aged 16 and over . The statement of reasons for the release states: "Despite the clear fictionality of most of the aspects, the sometimes very realistic and drastic violence in combination with the threats and various ambivalences of the characters and the action can lead to an overwhelming, disorienting effect in children under 16 years."

Reviews

The film has so far won over 36 percent of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 43 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

After the first screenings of the film in early January 2019 in Paris, the reviews were mixed. So Scott Mendelson thinks of Forbes , Glass was M. Night Shyamalan enttäuschendster film. He adds little value to his predecessors, offers nothing in terms of current commentary on his genre, and does not do the carefully constructed mythology any good. In addition, he is so focused on twists and turns in the story that he usually loses sight of his characters, Mendelson continues.

Directed by M. Night Shyamalan and also wrote the screenplay

Andreas Platthaus writes in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that by merging his two older films into a new one, Shyamalan is doing something that is called universe building: "The integration of different characters and storylines into a narrative continuum." That is the recipe for success of the superhero comics and Even more of their film adaptations, Platthaus continues, but only as long as one speaks of mainstream: “Performances that are perceived as singular can only suffer from such a continuation and thus degradation to a model. And those who still remember the original story, who loved it, suffer with it. "

Birgit Roschy from epd Film explains that Shyamalan is again misleading the viewer by turning history upside down with his trademark, an unpredictable twist : “As usual, he refuses a special effects show with auteur allure, staging action scenes against the line and grounds his characters in a dreary milieu at original locations in his native Philadelphia. "Shyamalan has managed to maintain his independence in the ups and downs of his career, and using his own resources largely do what he wants, and made all these contradictions the charm of this metafilm with its genre-breaking idiosyncrasies, continues Roschy.

Sassan Niasseri from Rolling Stone writes that Shyamalan portrays the potent superheroes as ultimate role models and at the same time satirizes their world as absolutely predictable: “The 49-year-old sees Glass as a reckoning with everyone who see fantasy as a denial of reality. Shyamalan doesn't have to deal with the laws of empiricism, and certainly not his superheroes. Doctor tells lies becomes the mantra of this film, which takes place over long periods in a closed institution, and one could see its inmates, including the murderers, as victims. "
