Gopalganj is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .

The area is 2033 km². The administrative seat is the city of Gopalganj .

The population is 2,562,012 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 19.02%. Gopalganj has a gender ratio of 1021 women per 1000 men and is one of the few districts with a surplus of women. The district has a literacy rate of 65.47% in 2011, an increase of almost 18 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is slightly above the average in Bihar, but below the national average. Just under 83% of the population are Hindus and around 17% are Muslims . Hindi and Bhojpuri are predominantly spoken in the district.

The district is very rural. Only 6.4% of the population live in cities.
