history

The name of the place Grieben is of Wendish origin, a castle as an outpost against the Wends is documented for the year 987 .

In the Middle Ages, the Grafschaft Grieben, which stretched between Tangermünde and the Ohre , was named after this place. In the middle of the 12th century, through the death of Count Otto I von Hillersleben through his daughter Berta , the county came to Count Otto, her son from her second marriage. From the inheritance of Count Otto, who took his ancestral seat in Grieben, some goods on the Ohre went to Count von Regenstein , whom Otto's daughter Luckarda had married, and were later sold to the surrounding monasteries. Most of the Grafschaft Grieben went to Count Gebhard von Arnstein , whom Otto's widow had married in a second marriage. This count sold the county of Grieben to Margrave Albrecht II .

From the 14th century, Grieben belonged as a manor to the von Itzemplitz family, whose old castle was rebuilt after the destruction in the war of freedom at the beginning of the 19th century. The Klewitz family has owned the castle since May 28, 1887. On September 30, 1928, the manor district of Grieben was united with the rural community of Grieben.

The palace of the Klewitz family, together with the manor house and the civil servants' house, formed an ensemble, which also included a park based on the Sanssouci model. After 1945 the castle was used as a school and later converted into an apartment building.

In 1954 the first rural outpatient clinic in the GDR opened in Grieben .

On May 31, 2010, Grieben merged with the other municipalities of the Tangerhütte-Land administrative community to form the new town of Tangerhütte.

As part of the village renewal, streets, paths and street lighting have been renewed in recent years.
