Zenon Grocholewski
Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski (born October 11, 1939 in Bródki , Poland ; † July 17, 2020 in Rome ) was a Polish clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Zenon Grocholewski received the sacrament of ordination on May 27, 1963 after his theological and philosophical training at the seminary in Poznan . He was then vicar in Poznan for three years before completing a doctoral degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . In 1972 he received his doctorate in canon law with summa cum laude with the work De exclusione indissolubilitatis ex consensu matrimoniali eiusque probatione , written in Latin . After postgraduate studies with stays in France and Germany , he was admitted to the Avvocato Rotale .
From 1972 to 1999 he worked at the Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature as a notary (1972–1977), chancellor (1977–1982) and general secretary (1982–1998). He taught canon law at the Gregorian (1975–1999) and the Pontifical Lateran University (1980–1984) and the Studio Rotale (1986–1998). In addition, he played a significant role in the amendment of the Codex Iuris Canonici in 1983.
December 21, 1982 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Acropolis and donated him on 6 January 1983, the episcopal ordination .
On October 5, 1998, he became Prefect of the Apostolic Signature. In 1999 John Paul II appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education and accepted him on February 21, 2001 as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry of San Nicola in Carcere in the cardinals college .
As prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, Grocholewski was also the incumbent Magnus Cancellarius of the Pontifical Gregorian University, the Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) , the Pontifical Biblical Institute (PIB) , the Pontifical Institute for Church Music ( Musica sacra ), and the Papal Institute for Christian Archeology (PIAC) and patron of the Latin America Institute and the Faculty of Christian and Classical Literature (FLCC) at the University of the Salesians . He directed the Pontifical Work for Spiritual Professions .
On February 21, 2011 he was elevated to cardinal priest while retaining his title diaconia , which had been declared pro hac vice to the title church .
Pope Francis confirmed him on November 30, 2013 as the Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education . On March 31, 2015, Pope Francis accepted Zenon Grocholewski's resignation due to reasons of age.
Zenon Grocholewski has published several books and over 550 articles published in 12 languages. He was co-editor of several professional magazines on canon law and a member of numerous scientific associations.
