Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts

Founded in 1877, the Design & Art Department in Lucerne is the oldest art school in Switzerland . The well-known Nidwalden painter Johann Melchior Wyrsch proposed to the Lucerne Council in 1783 that a drawing school be founded, and in 1784 he began teaching. One of his successors as a drawing teacher, Seraphin Weingartner , developed a new school concept and in 1877 founded the Lucerne School of Applied Arts from the drawing school . After the Second World War, the profile of the arts and crafts schools in Switzerland changed, primarily due to the reception of the training methods developed at the Bauhaus . From 1972 the educational institution called itself Schule für Gestaltung and from 1984 training on the tertiary level was offered as a higher technical school for design (HFG). In 1988 the first diploma of this level was awarded in Lucerne. From 1995 the school received a new status as a college for design and art in the sense of a technical college.
