Hanns Ernst Jäger

Hanns Ernst Jäger (born January 1, 1910 in Vienna ; † August 15, 1973 in Munich ) was an Austrian actor and radio play speaker .

Live and act

The son of a criminal inspector studied law and medicine after graduating from high school. He made his stage debut in 1937 at the Scala Theater in Vienna . Engagements in Linz , Graz and Chemnitz followed . Jäger performed in Darmstadt from 1941 to 1944 . Roles here were Karl Moor in Die Räuber , the title character in Egmont , Achilles in Penthesileia , Leicester in Maria Stuart , the title character in Goethe's Faust , Tellheim in Minna von Barnhelm and Mark Anton in Julius Caesar .

He then took part in the war. After his release from captivity, he came to the Schauspielhaus Bochum via Baden-Baden , Essen , Mannheim and Frankfurt am Main in 1951 , where he performed until 1955, after which he was engaged at the Vienna Burgtheater from 1955 to 1958 . He then worked as a freelancer in Essen, Karlsruhe , Mannheim, Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna, among others .

Jäger was best known for his performances of plays by Bertolt Brecht . He embodied Puntila in Mr. Puntila and his servant Matti , Schweyk in Schweyk in the Second World War , Galilei in the Life of Galilei , the cook in Mother Courage and her children and about a dozen times the village clerk Adzak in The Caucasian Chalk Circle .

Other roles in Bochum were the title role in Heinrich von Kleist's Amphitryon , Elector in Prince Friedrich von Homburg , Marquis Posa in Don Karlos , Lopachin in Der Kirschgarten , Shylock in The Merchant of Venice (1952) and the title character in Othello .

He also played the village judge Adam in Der zerbrochne Krug , Theodor in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's posse Der Unbrechliche (1961, Theater am Kurfürstendamm ), the servant Ludwig in Martin Walser's play larger than life Herr Krott (1964, Staatstheater Stuttgart ), Xanter in the world premiere of Herbert Asmodis Dieb und Werden (1967) and Käsebier in Rolf Schneider's Dieb und König (1969).

Jäger made guest appearances at the Ruhr Festival in Recklinghausen as Pastor Parish in Arthur Miller's Hexenjagd (1966) and in his star role as Schweyk (1967). In 1972, a year before his death, he played a disastrously aged comedian in the television series Der Kommissar ( Episode The End of a Humorist ) with unusually tragic features for a crime series.

He was also a busy radio drama speaker. His countless roles in this medium also included the portrayal of the film director Vince Langham in the eleventh Paul Temple multi-part , entitled Paul Temple and the Geneva Case , with René Deltgen , Irmgard Först and Paul Klinger . During a performance by Mr Puntila and his servant Matti , he collapsed and died of heart failure in a Munich hospital. It rests in the Salzburg municipal cemetery .
