Hans Peter Hümmer (born August 24, 1943 in Unterasbach , Fürth district ) is a German pediatric surgeon and student historian .

Life

As the son of a medical officer and country doctor, Hümmer attended elementary school in Oberasbach and the humanistic new high school in Nuremberg . After high school he studied 1962-1968 medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen , the University of Vienna and the University of Graz . He did the physics and the state examination in Erlangen. With a forensic doctor working at Marika Geldmacher-von Mallinckrodt , he was in 1968 in Erlangen magna cum laude for Dr. med. PhD . He became a member of the Schlaraffia Am Erlenanger .

surgery

Hümmer was a medical assistant in Schwabach and Pforzheim . He became a surgeon with Georg in Pforzheim. The training was interrupted in 1970/71 by the eighteen months remaining as a medical officer in Munich and Karlsruhe . In April 1976, Hümmer joined the Surgical University Clinic in Erlangen, where he devoted himself to thoracic surgery , visceral surgery and intensive care medicine . He received additional training in pediatric surgery at the University Hospital Zurich from Peter Paul Rickham and at the University Hospital Erlangen . After three years as senior physician with Franz Paul Gall and after several stays abroad, Hümmer took over the management of pediatric surgery in Erlangen's surgery on January 1, 1984. In the same year he completed his habilitation. As a private lecturer , he received the license to teach surgery / pediatric surgery. In March 1988 he was appointed associate professor for pediatric surgery to Essen , and in May 1991 back to Erlangen. The department there became independent in 1996 according to the Bavarian University Act. Hümmer managed it until his retirement in March 2010. His students continue his work at the University Hospital Regensburg (Christian Knorr and Peter Weber) and in Kaiserswerth (Bertram Reingruber).

Medical law and patient education

In 1978, with Walther Weißauer and Wolfgang Müller-Osten from the Professional Association of German Surgeons , Hümmer began developing information sheets for patients and their relatives. In Germany and Europe they were unprecedented back then. They are used to document a legally compliant and at the same time understandable information before surgical interventions. The "step clearing" set standards. The "basic information on the educational discussion" documented in writing has proven itself in many liability proceedings. The sheets appear in foreign languages and in digital version. They are continuously updated and recognized by the courts as evidence for the correct and comprehensive clarification.

research

For more than three decades, Hummer's surgical focus was on congenital malformations of the newborn, surgical oncology in childhood and thoracic surgery . In the reconstruction of the chest wall he continued the school of his teacher Hegemann. Since 1976 he has treated congenital and acquired deformities such as funnel chest and keel chest across all ages and disciplines. Under his leadership, the first funnel breast center in Germany was established, where several thousand interventions were carried out by the time he retired. The so-called Erlanger procedure, the Minimalized Erlangen Correction Method (MEK), goes back to Hümmer . Hümmer has supervised over 100 doctoral students and qualified nine employees.
