Hercules is a 2014 American adventure film directed by Brett Ratner, starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role. The film is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars by Steve Moore .

Hercules is the mighty son of the god Zeus, yet he leads a life full of hardship. After completing twelve tasks as a slave, Hercules can finally be free again. But he has not only lost the love that was the reason for his imprisonment, but also the esteem he deserved. He has therefore led a life as a mercenary for years and goes into battle with his companions for good pay. From King Cotys he gets the order to free his kingdom of Thrace from the tyrant Rhesus. Since Cotys' army consists only of peasants and not soldiers, Hercules and his companions decide to train the army first. Iolaos , Hercules' nephew and companion, also shows the army the strength and power of Hercules. He shows them the props for his tasks and tells the stories. This motivates the army additionally and from now on they let Hercules lead them.
The army trained in this way is able to drive Rhesus' forces to flight, and Hercules brings Rhesus to King Cotys. There Rhesus reveals that Cotys played a double game with Hercules and his companions and only used them to defeat the rebellious Rhesus: Cotys murdered the rightful heir to the throne and only then became king himself. When Cotys realizes that he is seen through, he first wants to hire Hercules for further services, then pay him and let him go, but when Hercules wants to fight him, he has him knocked down and chained and his friends locked in dungeons. It turns out that Cotys has allied himself with King Eurystheus, the former lord of Hercules. He had let the family of Hercules tear to death by wolves, because he feared that Hercules would become more popular than himself. Subsequently, he had spread the rumor that Hercules himself had murdered his family in a delusional manner, and let him believe that too. When Hercules found out about this, he was able to free himself from his bonds and kill Eurystheus and his wolves through the anger that arose and the incentives of his friend Amphiaraus. In the end, Hercules and his companions face Cotys' army. When Hercules can kill Cotys, the army accepts Hercules as their new leader.

The shooting of Hercules began in early June and ended in mid-October 2013. The shooting took place in Croatia , Budapest and Paty, Hungary , among others .
To prepare for the role of the strong Hercules, Johnson embarked on an extremely grueling exercise program. According to his own statement, he trained harder than ever for eight months. Even while filming, he was not allowed to do without the training program.
Johnson later admitted that the beard he had to wear while filming was made from the pubic hair of a Tibetan grunt . This is a very expensive and fine hair.
The film deals with the central question of whether Hercules is really the son of Zeus. The tasks, such as the fight against the nine-headed hydra or the slaying of the Nemean lion, are distributed by his nephew Iolaos with heroic details in order to spread the name of Hercules for the purpose of mercenary work, for example the nine-headed hydra were men in disguise. In addition, with every task he received support from his companions, who acted in the background and thus made Hercules look even stronger. Mythological references such as the hydra, the existence of centaurs, and the three-headed guard dog of the underworld are explained through delusions and hallucinations. Thus, the film with its reality base completely stands out from the other film adaptations. The above-average strength of Hercules alone suggests a descent from a god.

Hercules achieved a Metascore of 47/100 points on Metacritic , based on 25 reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , 60% of the reviews are positive and are therefore “fresh”. The average rating is 5.4 / 10 based on 107 ratings.
The film-dienst describes Hercules as a "standardized historical action film that focuses on the equipment and casual sayings that are supposed to cushion the violence." The cinema critic particularly praises the work of director Brett Ratner , who has "remarkable qualities as an action choreographer" and offers “strong action entertainment” overall. As negative points he mentions "the bad CGI effects" and the "somewhat disappointing finale, which apart from a conflagration and a giant statue knocked over by Hercules doesn't have much to offer".
