Hermann von Decker

Friedrich Wilhelm Otto Hermann von Decker (born August 3, 1815 in Berlin ; † November 2, 1872 there ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and inspector of the 1st artillery inspection as well as a member of the editorial team of the military weekly paper .

Life

Hermann was a son of the Prussian major general Karl von Decker (1784–1844) and his wife Amalie, née von Heydebrandt and Lasa (1790–1864).

Career

Decker visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . Subsequently, on August 5, 1833, he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a second lieutenant . In mid-November 1834 he was assigned to the 1st Artillery Brigade . On February 12, 1837, he was aggregated there and classified as an artillery officer on June 30, 1840. Decker was promoted to Prime Lieutenant on June 19, 1842 with a patent from June 19, 1839 in the 3rd Artillery Brigade. By mid-March 1847 he was promoted to captain and company commander . As leader of the 6-pound foot battery No. 11, Decker took part in the battles near Schleswig , Fredericia and Düppel in 1848 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his behavior .

Now as commander, Decker led the foot battery in 1849 when the Baden Revolution was suppressed in the battles near Hornburg, Rinnthal , Ubstadt , Bischweiler and Kuppenheim . From May 27, 1852 to February 1, 1856 he was an artillery officer from the place in Küstrin and was then promoted to major and under position à la suite of the Guard Artillery Regiment, commander of the train of the Guard Corps . This was followed by assignments as commander of the fortress division of the 3rd Artillery Regiment and as commander of the II division. During the mobilization on the occasion of the German War , Decker was appointed commander of the artillery of the Main Army on May 20, 1866 , which he took in the battles near Hammelburg , Aschaffenburg , Werbach , Helmstadt , Üttingen-Roßbrunn and the bombardment of Würzburg . After the peace treaty he was promoted to major general on September 20, 1866 and awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves and swords, and in November 1866 with the Commendation of Honor of the Oldenburg House and Merit Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig with swords.

He was promoted to lieutenant general on July 21, 1870 , and was transferred to Posen as the inspector of the 1st Artillery Inspection , and on August 14, 1870 , when the war against France began, his staff was transferred to the High Command of the 2nd Army . There he was given command of the siege artillery in front of Strasbourg on August 21, 1870 . After the capitulation of the city and fortress, Decker took part in the campaign in southern France and was appointed commander of the artillery of the Southern Army on January 1, 1871 . In addition to the two classes of the Iron Cross, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Frederick with Swords, the Commander I Class of the Military Karl Friedrich Order of Merit and the Grand Cross of the Bavarian Military Order of Merit . Kaiser Wilhelm I paid tribute to Decker on June 16, 1871 by awarding the star to the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class, with oak leaves and swords on the ring. He returned to his peacetime position as inspector on July 4, 1871, died a little later on November 2, 1872 as a result of an operation in Berlin and was buried on November 5, 1872 in the Invalidenfriedhof .

The brigadier of the 3rd Artillery Brigade assessed him as follows in 1847: "Exceptionally talented, he promises to earn the right to an exceptional promotion."
