Himamaylan is located in the center of the coastal strip of the province of Negros Occidental on the island of Negros . It is placed in the third income bracket of cities in the Philippines . It is located 83 km south of the provincial capital Bacolod City and can be reached in a good two hours' drive from there. An important educational institution in the community is the campus of West Visayas State University .

In the west the city borders on the Gulf of Panay , in the north on the municipality of Binalbagan , in the south on the city of Kabankalan City and in the east it borders on the province of Negros Oriental . The city has 106,880 inhabitants who live on a total of 19 barangays . It extends over an area of ​​36,704 hectares and is classified as partially urban. The city of Himamaylan has a natural deep-water harbor, which many ferries call at.

history

The settlement of Himamaylan was founded by the Spaniards and was once the first provincial capital of Negros Occidental , in 1795 a military garrison was set up by the Spaniards. Himamaylan only became a big city on March 5, 2001, based on the Republic Act 9028, which the then President of the Philippines, Gloria Arroyo , signed.

Attractions

The city's best-known son is General Pascual Ledesma Y Villasis in whose honor a monument was erected in Gatuslao Park. The Spanish fortress (Spanish Kota) in Himamaylan commemorates the time when the city was the seat of governor from 1795 to 1849. The Buenavista Heroes Park was built in honor of the resistance fighters against the Japanese occupation during World War II . The Ilog-Hilabangan Watershed Forest Reserve is inland from the city.
