Escalante

Escalante City is a city in the northeast of the Philippine province of Negros Occidental on the island of Negros, part of the western Visayas group of islands . The town, which is 23 m above sea level, bears the name of the old village Escalante (Old Escalante), which lies east of the town on a promontory directly on the sea (10 ° 50 '10 "N, 123 ° 33' 37" E ).

Escalante is opposite the island of Cebu , which can be reached by water, including a ferry and an airplane. In the vicinity of Escalante there is a white sandy beach common for the region and unexplored caves in the south of the city, which also make Escalante interesting for tourism . Therefore, the city government decided to expand land use for tourism purposes to 16 percent; the main source of income for the predominantly rural population has so far been agriculture and fishing.

Escalante can be reached - via the capital, Bacolod City - from Cebu and Manila by plane or ship, and from Iloilo ( Panay Island ) by water. Escalante can be reached from Bacolod by land via federal highway 1, for example by bus, via Tabuelan or via Toledo and San Carlos City (UTC + 8).

Escalante City has 94,070 inhabitants (August 1, 2015 census). Melecio "Beboy" Yap and Maymay Barcelona were replaced by Santiago Barcelona Jr. and Gilda Crisme in the mayor's office and vice-mayor's office respectively.

history

During the Second World War , Negros was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1942 . It came to the siege of Escalante, which was liberated by the Philippine army and the guerrilla army of the Negrosan in 1945.

On September 20, 1985, there was a massacre in Escalante City, in which more than 30 people were killed and more than 20 people were injured, some seriously. During a peaceful protest march, paramilitary troops of the then government shot dead civilians who wanted to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the declaration of martial law . The massacre is also known as Bloody Thursday (Engl. Bloody Thursday ) or "Escam" means - an abbreviation for "Escalante massacre".

Escalante received city rights with the signing of the charter on February 28, 2001 and its ratification on March 31, 2001.

Carmelite Mission

In 1958 the Order of the Carmelites came to Escalante from the Netherlands at the invitation of the late Bishop Epifanio Surban of the Diocese of Dumaguete . In the following years the Carmelites implemented the reforms of the Second Vatican Council . The people were brought up in Christianity and the churches opened up to the poor. In the spirit of the Populorum Progressio , the Carmelites carried out social reforms as part of their mission; so in 1961 the Carmelites opened Mount Carmel College . The school led to profound changes in Escalante's socio-cultural, economic and political life. Mount Carmel College also enables children from poor families to graduate from school in Escalante.

geography

Escalante has an area of 192.76 km². It is on the northeastern tip of Negros Occidental, across from the island of Cebu . It is 49 kilometers from San Carlos City and 95 kilometers from the provincial capital Bacolod City . It is bounded to the northwest by Sagay City and to the south by the city of Toboso . To the east the community borders on Tanon Street . Other places in the area are Cadiz Viejo , Ualog and Paraiso .

Mountain country

Outside the center of Escalantes there is a region of low hills that extend towards Mount Lunay (200 m). The hill country was created by volcanism ; it is probably a dormant volcanic cinder cone. The higher Barangays Escalantes are at the foot of Mount Lunay. The occasional rumbling of the volcano led to the belief that it was "the dead". An indicator of the dormant character of the mountain is the high sulfur concentration that can be measured at the foot of the mountain in spring. Many slopes are very steep, such as in the Barangay Binaguiohan ; however, the steepness of the slopes did not stop the development and growth of Escalante.

Coastal region

The diversity of flora in the Escalantes coastal region is one of the richest in Negros Occidental. The coasts consist of two surviving ecosystems : the onshore mangrove forests of the coastal area, which are characterized by trees and scrub, and the seagrass and grass-like plants in the shallower nearshore area. Remnants of a third ecosystem, a coral reef, can be found in a limited coastal area . Escalante's marine waters are generally warm all year round, with the exception of the early morning hours in the cooler winter months from early December to late February. The salinity of the water is around 28 to 36 parts per thousand units.

climate

The atmospheric conditions that affect Escalante's climate are similar to those of the Negros island. During the summer months (April to December) an air current develops from the south, which, unlike the low-pressure center of the Asian continent, reaches the Philippines from a south-westerly direction and leads to the south-west monsoon . In the period from November to March, Negros has relatively cool weather, as the Asian continent cools faster than the surrounding seas, which leads to high pressure centers and deflects the winds in a clockwise direction. This period is known as the northeast monsoon. During this time, the tides are also lower, which is known as aya-ay. The northeast wind system dominates from March to April. The highest temperatures are in the period from March to June. However, the coastal location leads to constant temperatures.
