The Hohe Holz is a large forest area immediately west of the poorly forested, intensively farmed Magdeburg Börde in Saxony-Anhalt .

location

The area forms the southern part of a ridge which extends from Lappwald in the north west to the Bode knee near Oschersleben extends. It represents a sandstone floe rising from the plain of the Börde . At many points, brooks have dug into the sandstone, so that marl emerges in many places . This mountain range is limited in the northeast by the upper Aller . Three source brooks of the Aller arise on the northern slope of the Hohe Holz. The Aller drains towards the Weser . The Hohe Holz forms the watershed between the Elbe and Weser. To the south, the terrain slopes gently towards the Great Break . To the north-west of the Hohe Holz lies the small forest area Pröbstling , to the east the Saure Holz and the Kniel elevation .

The highest point in the Hohe Holz is the Edelberg at 208.8  m above sea level. NHN . Other prominent elevations are the Kahle Berg on the western edge and the heights of Königsberg and Beckerberg in the southern part . The river Bode, which flows a few kilometers south of the Hohe Holz, is at an altitude of around 80  m . Administratively, the Hohen Holz area belongs to the community of Ausleben , the Eggenstedt district of the city of Wanzleben-Börde , the city of Oschersleben (Bode) and the district of Wormsdorf of the municipality of Eilsleben in the Börde district .

The hilly country, designated as a landscape protection area, is around 15 km². In the interior of the predominantly beech forest area, an approximately 150 hectare nature reserve Waldfrieden and Vogelherd im Hohen Holz was established.

In the northeastern part of the Hohe Holz, the Hubertus oak is the strongest tree in the forest area. Another distinctive tree is the king beech in the south of the forest. The distinctive Piepsack forest is located a little west of Hubertushöhe .

The abandoned Hell quarry is located in the western part of the forest . The so-called Hunnengraben is located north of the quarry . It is said to have got its name after a Hungarian army camped in the area between Eggenstedt and Schöningen in the 10th century . A little to the east of the quarry are three barrows . Further barrows are located in the north-eastern part of the Hohen Holz before Eggenstedt.

The birch grove is located in the southeastern part of the Hohe Holz. The Goldbach flows through this part , and the birch spring rises here . Nearby is the Socialist Stone , which is reminiscent of a meeting point for the German labor movement.

The cultural monuments Hotel Hubertushöhe and Restaurant Waldfrieden are located in the Hohen Holz . The Hohe Holz is also of great importance as a local recreation area and “green lung” in the region about 30 km west of Magdeburg . The responsible forestry office is the Altbrandsleben Uniform Forestry Office based in Neindorf .

history

In the past, the Hohe Holz comprised larger areas. However, peripheral areas were used for settlements and agriculture, the wood used for building purposes. During armed conflicts, the local population fled into the dense forest and sought protection here. In the western part of the Hohe Holz the term “ Hell and Hell Gate” , which still exists , goes back to Hele with the meaning to hide and refers to this history of the area. The border between the dioceses of Halberstadt and Magdeburg ran through the forest . A border path still runs along the historical border. The Hotel Hubertushöhe and the Waldfrieden restaurant were built around 1900. Until 1943 there was a gray heron colony in Hohen Holz. Only in 1978 did two pairs of gray herons breed here again. Over the years, this resulted in a large colony with almost one hundred breeding pairs that find their food in the neighboring Großer Bruch.

In 1967 the construction of a nature trail began. In addition to the nature trail with around 25 information boards, several signposted cycling and hiking trails have been created or expanded.
