Hyde Park forms District E-18 of the Boston Police Department .

The after the baseball player of the Atlanta Braves named and Donald Ross -designed George Wright Golf Course lies partly in Hyde Park , partly in neighboring Roslindale .

history

In 1845, retired businessman Henry Grew and his family vacationed south of Boston in what was then the western part of Dorchester . Near the valley through which the Neponset River flows, he discovered a place from where he had an excellent view of the Blue Hills and decided to purchase the land in question, covering an area of several hundred acres . This land later became known as Grew's Woods and is still today part of the Stony Brook Reservation and the George Wright Golf Course . In 1847, Grew finally relocated to his newly acquired land. In the following years, bought Hyde Park Land Company 200 acres (800,000 m²) land in the same area and began the construction of houses around an unofficial stop on the Boston and Providence Railroad at Kenny's Bridge on the road from Dedham to Milton Lower Mills (now the Hyde Park station of the MBTA at the River Street ). The next official stop was the Readville station .

Today, however , the founder of Hyde Park is Alpheus Perley Blake, who, together with 20 partners for the Fairmount Land Company, opened up the Fairmount Hill district on the west side of Brush Hill Road in Milton in 1856 . This led to the construction of a bridge over the Neponset River and the construction of a train station for the New York and New England Railroad (now Fairmount Station ). Within a few years, the two development companies merged, which accelerated growth even more. By 1867 there were already six train stations in this area.

At the Massachusetts General Court one was petition addressed to the city on 22 April 1868 in support of self-government Hyde Park in Norfolk County led whose limits the populated country in Dorchester ( Grew's Woods and the areas of Hyde Park Land Company ), Milton and Dedham included. Hyde Park was part of Norfolk County until 1912 , when it was voted in favor of annexation to Boston, Suffolk County .

In the 1960s, Hyde Park threatened to split off from Boston in the event that the city actually built the proposed Southwest Expressway , thus splitting Hyde Park into a fork.

Hyde Park has a diverse and active industrial past. The Westinghouse Sturtevant company was based there for almost 130 years .
